Thanks everybody!
I think I was just releasing my pent up decorating frustrations and enjoying being able to do so in a completely different style than usual. I never got to do up a nursery for my baby. Waiting til the baby is 10 doesn't give you as much whimsical license, though. He had his preferences for blue and green and not having stuff all over the walls. He wanted the room to not look juvenile and he likes a clean space.
The great thing is I didn't buy anything new except the paint, the $4 wall clock, and the fabric for the chairs. The IKEA display case, the round table under the window, and the desk lamp were from freecycle. I refinished the table and painted the legs nickle colored. The headboard and footboard were made by my dad 30 years ago. The huge earth picture was in my dad's office, a gift from my brother, and the map trash can was dad's when he was a kid. The green floor lamp was my granddad's (it used to not work and was peeling black paint). The comfy corner chair was mine in college, and the folding bookshelf from my first apartment. The directors chair, formerly black and orange, was bought from a flea market when we were just married.
Now if only I could finish painting my room... I stalled out on that project 6 years ago. I'm really a queen of half done projects.
