I've been decluttering off and on for a few years now and thought I would share my progress here. I don't have any before pictures, but we've done away with at least half of our stuff.

this is my house as it is today, all I did before taking pictures was make the bed in the master bedroom and put away a couple baskets of toys in the playroom. I can't say enough about just having what we need, and no more. it makes keeping on top of the house so much simpler. we used to have way too much stuff, mostly dh but I had some excess as well.

And can I say I'm drooling over the idea of doing laundry upstairs? I assume your laundry area must be close to where you actually live? We have an older house so the laundry room is in the basement -- we have a chute, but it's two flights from where the stuff is clean to where it actually goes.

I finally accomplished something today, so I wanted to post. The kitchen table and sideboard are one of the big problem areas in my house as you can see:

Today, they are finally clean and clear!

I'm loving your red chairs! Did you find them that way or paint them yourselves? Good job on the cleaning up, it looks great!

ETA: I just looked through the rest of you house pictures and your kitchen looks amazing! Did you guys build it yourselves? Do you know what kind of wood the shelving is made of?

Thanks! Our house is very, very special to us.

No, we didn't do the kitchen, the previous owners (who lived here for 25 years) did it. The shelves and cabinets are oak, actually, though they don't really look it.

The red chairs were my project, and were made that way by many layers of high-gloss spray paint over some maple-laminate chairs we got off Craigslist. I love them.

Clean tabletops make me smile. Good job!

As for keeping them that way ... clear them off each night before bed and the next day you'll feel like it's Christmas morning in reverse to come down all bleary-eyed and searching for coffee, only to discover the treat of a clear surface ...

You can spray paint laminate? Did you use a spray primer first?

I used the type of spray paint that is meant for plastic. It's fairly horrible stuff, but it is sure holding up well.
