Wow, thanks. I'm convinced. Now to tactfully explain to my family why I would like to avoid items made in China and plastic in general...

Glad to help on this. We have problems with dh family sending junk still, but they are overseas, so its at least limited by weight and the cost of shipping.
I think its a process to get through to them without them thinking your depriving the children, I see alot of people go through this and even to the point of going behind the parents back.

If you have alot of plastic toys and dont know what to do with them, I saw somewhere to send them back to the manufacturers to deal with. If everyone did this it would be interesting to see how they dealt with it!

Good luck with your family.

I appreciate the concerns about plastic, but for us, plastic toys work well because they can be thrown into the dishwasher to sanitize them. We have had staph infections and are on a regimen to disinfect the house, so for us, plastic toys work better than those that can only be spot-cleaned.

plastic toys are nice (especially little tikes) and hold up well. Get them at garage sales and clean them up to make a perfect gift for the little ones!

We love Playmobil as well and since they made primarily in Germany, I don't see the whole slave labor an issue. Also they test everything, and I like they products come with a lifetime guarantee.

I take it on a case-by-case basis. I just got rid of all MIC toys, and today I bought some tinker toys. I haven't opened them, but I think many of the parts are plastic, not wood.

I base it on durability, reliability of brand, and where it is made. I also tend to buy second hand, so I am supporting locally owned resale shops, not a corporation.

My preference is not plastic though.
