Nursing on an L5 medication?

Monday I was diagnosed with a seziure disorder. I told the doctor I was nursing and he congradulated me for lasting 16 months and more american women need to nurse longer yada yada yada. So when he wrote me a script I questioned him about it being safe for baby, that none will get to her. He said If it did it would be little bits. Dont worry. So I get the med and take it home. Did not take a dose. Called a local LC who has Dr. Hales book. She says it is L5. I call the doc back and again he assures be it is fine to take. What do I do? I am not 100% assured. The med is Zonegran . He seems to think that is the only drug I should take. My daughter is 16 months and weighs about 25 or 26 lbs.

I would try to find an email address for Hale himself and get his detailed opinion.

You can also see if you can get your LC or Dr. to post on Dr. Hale's medications forum...

to you. I would double-check if there is an alternative medication, myself.

I take a seizure med off label for Bipolar disorder (Lamictal), baby is 8 mo and ebf. It's an L5, I think. I took it through pregnancy. We've both had multiple blood levels and the excretion is in fact very low. My ped ran it by a pediatric neurologist who ok'd it, as well. The rating is not the whole story, and there ARE seizure meds that are safe for bf'ing.
