Mothers Helper?

I wasn't sure where to put this. I may be considering a Mothers Helper for like 1 1/2 hrs per day a few days a week. Any idea where to find such a person and what the going rate is?

After DD was born, I was desperate to get some help with DS during the day. Luckily a 16 y.o. boy lives next door, and he was perfect! Could deal with DS's endless energy, and we've known his family since we've lived here. I paid $8/hour.

If you want afternoons, a high school student is probably a good bet. Other options: college student or home schooler. If you're associated with a place or worship or a moms group of any kind, I'd start putting the word out there.

Hope you find someone great.

Hi gratefulbambina,

Mother's helper rates vary, depending on where you live, and the age and experience of your MH. e.g. a college-educated adult MH in a big city would earn more than a 14-yr-old in a rural area. You could start by asking other local moms you know how much they pay their babysitters/mother's helpers - and if they have anyone they'd recommend!
For any MH's over age 16, I'd recommend paying at least minimum wage... more if the MH has experience and education.
If you hire a MH's for 90 mins at either the beginning or end of the day, it might be easier to find someone who's available (as opposed to 90 mins mid-day).
