School Or Not To School?

I am weighing out my options in terms of going to school, or being an apprentice MW. The amount of time they take is not an issue, I am more interested in your experiences.

I am going to start self-educating more now, is there a somewhat comprehensive list you would consider excellent to go through?

(Including anatomy, etc)

What were the advantages of not going to a MW School?

(Besides money? SMS is 40,000 a year, plus books. I would also have to spend about 6,000 on CC classes first. : I would get financial aid, but not enough to cover everything, my DH is in school so we don't have extra money, if I desepately wanted to, I would find a way, but I want to make sure I know what I want first.)

What are the advantages of going to a MW School?

Tell me something lovely about being a Midwife. :

It jumped into my heart when I was 17, but I felt that I wasn't old enough, and I didn't have a baby. I thought SMS was the only way (we lived near-ish Seattle) and I couldn't fathom having to go to community colleg for a year and a half. In fact, I still can't. I have no aversion to knowledge (I love to learn) but not in that environment.

Now that I have discovered there is more than one way to get there, I am aiming myself directly at being a Midwife.

Also, I am looking to expand my library, any used books on midwifery youd like to trade/sell/give?
Thank you,
Crystal

Hmm, I don't know that you'll find my reply helpful at all or not... but.

What kind of midwife do you want to be? CPM, DEM or CNM (some states have the CM option as well)? Do you intend to have a homebirth, BC or hospital practice?

I am taking CPM/DEM path. At this time I'm assisting at births and my plan is to enroll in AAMI in the next year or two and find an apprenticeship. I hear that AAMI is just awesome and the price is right. When I have met the requirements, I will take the PEP route to sit for the NARM exam.

Books that I have and love or want to get soon:
Holistic Midwifery Vol 1
Holistic Midwifery Vol 2
Heart & Hands (I much prefer the newest edition, the 4th ed)
Paths to Becoming a Midwife
Ina May's Guide to Childbirth
The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth

When I was 18, my dad offered to pay my way to college and I considered going to nursing school to take the CNM route but I decided to get married instead. After having a hospital birth and two homebirths, I'm really fired up to be a homebirth midwife.

I'm not very far in my journey, but I'm enjoying it. Good luck!

I am an apprentice midwife AND I am doing schooling. I am enrolled in AAMI, and it is a fabulous program.

You definitely don't have to fork over $30-40,000 to become a direct-entry midwife. There are many other options.

Thank YOu so much!

Your responses have been *really* helpful. I think I'm going to do the AAMI, it looks amazing. I am excellent at self-direction, but I also do enjoy pre-set goals. It gives me a feeling of accomplishment.

I am looking to become a CPM or (was the other DEM?) I don not want to go to nursing school at all. I would be looking at, best case scenario, doing homebirths and being affiliated with a birthcenter to I can take clients who woud like to birth there as well. I don't see myself opening a birth center until after my kids finish high school.

My dream is to be a Midwife, Prenatal Masseus, Childbirth Class educator (preferrably "birthing from within" style) and have a very intimate caring practice. I get really excited thinking about it.

Thaks so much,
Crystal

LOL... I wish. He probably would except they've been paying off debt and don't have the money handy right now. Otherwise, I'm sure he'd help me out or at least loan me the money interest free. Heck ~$4k for AAMI is way cheaper than the $13k/yr+ I was looking at for college.

He did loan us part of the birth fee to pay our midwife last year, but then told me to just keep it as a gift.
