Yogurt expiration

I just checked the expiration date on some Traderspoint creamery yogurt I have in the fridge and it says it expired in 9/13. It doesn't smell off, so is it really bad?

My rule it that if doesn't smell bad, we eat it.

It might be a little more sour but I wouldn't have a problem with cultured dairy going bad.

This is my rule too. Yogurt never seems to go bad, although occasionally a carton has been known to get pushed to the back of the fridge and grow a few whiskers. We chuck it then.

I'm making my own yogurt now and I could theoretically continue doing so with the same batch for years, so I'd have a little bit of years-old yogurt in each batch. Interesting, huh?

I notice more whey on old yogurt. That's about all.

I agree with ^ .

I agree with all of the above. I have eaten yogurt that is more than a month (or 2) past its exp date.

Awesome. I would have felt really bad if I had let it spoil.:

DOes anyone know about culturing new yogurt with yogurt past it's expiration date? I bought some yogurt intending to make my own yogurt, but haven't gotten to it yet. Now my yogurt that I bought is passed dates and I still want to make my own yogurt- will it still work?

I should think it would still work. Try it and see.

I used the same open container of yogurt to culture a couple batches and it went past the date. The yogurt was fine and it made great yogurt too.

Aren't cultures amazing?

yay yogurt!

I just recently noticed, store-bought yogurt (stonyfield farms) gets moldy in my fridge after a while, but my homemade raw yogurt never does.

and I'm no stickler about cleanliness, either- I just pour warmed milk into what's left in my yogurt jar each week :

I have never had my own homemade yogurt mold, even after it has set in my fridge for over a month (not that that happens very often!). I have had boughten yogurt mold; it totally grosses me out, almost to the point of gagging. I do think that cultures are fascinating and amazing. However did people live without the commercial stuff for milennia (note the sarcasm here)!
