sewing non-felted sweater w/o serger

I want to re-fashion a sweater but without felting it first, and I would rather not take the time right now to learn how to use my serger - that's been sitting in storage since I bought it at a yarn sale :.....

Does anyone have any tips for sewing knit/sweater material on a regular machine? Say, for example, I wanted to make a pullover into a cardigan. If I cut up the middle and zig zag the edges, then turn them over and seam down, would that work?

I think you can do your re-do fine with a regular sewing machine. I have the best results with a longer straight stitch rather than a zigzag, even though a zigzag stitch is the more accepted right answer. I would practice stitching on scraps first. Sometimes you need to lighten up on the presser foot pressure so the thick knit feeds better.
