I need a pattern!

Help! I'm trying to find a simple dress pattern for my girls to make dress up dresses for the holidays. I got some nice fabric at Joann's on sale today for under $2 a yard and got 3 yards in 2 different colors

So the dress pattern can be very simple, as the fabric will be snazzy enough to be princess like (it's crushed panne costume fabric)

Any suggestions? I didnt like the costume patterns i saw... and a free or cheap pattern would be nice!!

Since you didn't find a pattern at the store, you might want to search etsy and ebay for vintage costume patterns. Also, check out the links to pattern shops in the right column of the Dress a Day blog. Happy hunting!

Is it a knit or a woven?

Patterns? Who needs a pattern?

When my grandma taught me to sew, she taught me how to make my own patterns. Find a shirt that fits and put it on a piece of newspaper and trace it while leaving room for the seams. Since it is for dress up clothes, I would choose ones without sleeves. I always add a little room for growth too. I do this for the top part of the dress and then I just cut a really long piece of cloth and gather it or use elastic and then attach it to the shirt. There are several other ways of making your own patterns but this is the easiest with the least cost.

Be careful when you're cutting that stuff... the lint it sheds from the cut edges is VERY itchy.
