Vitex Question

Hi,
This is the first thread I've started since joining MDC so I apologize if it is in the wrong place. My dh and I have been TTC #2 for about 8 months now with no luck. I have been charting my cycles most of the time and started taking my basal body temp (when I remember). I am still nursing my 2 year old atleast 6 times per day. I have very irregular cycles and sometimes show symptoms of O twice in one cycle but if I do a LH test usually only one of the times shows a surge. I have recently started vitex to get my cycle back on tract. I was origionally taking solaray capsules 2 times a day, but the other day I was talking to an herb reb for herb pharm and she convinced me that their liquid extract was better. She told me to take 1 tsp in the morning (several dropper fulls). The next morning I out of excitement quickly opened the bottle up and and without first tasting gulped down a full tsp (ended up being 5 dropper fulls) of the stuff. I thought I was going to throw up my insides. I just about saw stars it was so strong and burned all the way down to my stomach. I finally was able to force down a piece of bread so I didn't dry heave all my stomach acid up. The next day I thought long and hard how to take this awful stuff. I decided to start out with 3 dropper fulls in OJ. Not much better but I didn't get the gag reflex or the watering mouth I got the day before. Still not something I feel I can endure every day. I guess my point of this long and drawn out story is what have you wise mamas done in my situation? Has anyone had experience taking the liquid Vitex/ Chaste Berry ? How do you take it if you have tried it? Would you recommend I try something else to regulate my cycle besides weaning? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Maybe try Vitex capsules before throwing in the towel on Vitex. I'm trying the capsules and I think I'm getting some help from them...had amazing CM and am now in the 2WW.

That's great news. Now that I think of it I had pretty good CM after I started taking it. I think I'll finish the bottle of capsules I started. I still have several left and I haven' t missed any days since I took the liquid the last 2 days. I'm just wondering if any one has any suggestions on taking the liquid, I would hate to waste it. I don't think I return it since I already opened it. I still will buy new capsules when I run out if I can't find a tolerable way to take the liquid. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I take liquid Vitex in iced herbal tea and I can barely taste it. I put two dropperfuls in about two cups of an iced blend of Traditional Medicinals 'Female Toner' and Tazo 'Passion' tea sweetened with honey. You can still taste a trace of it, but it's diluted enough that it doesn't make the tea taste bad. I've tried a lot of other things before doing this and it seems to work best. Juice always made it taste even stronger for me.

Correction - It's more like three dropperfuls, but I measured it out and it's a full teaspoon.

Thanks. I'll have to make up a batch of your concoction, it sounds like it's pretty yummy. I know what you mean about the juice, it was pretty bad.

What I do is, heat up enough water for a pitcher (hot but not boiling) and put 4 bags of the Female Toner tea and 4 bags of the Passion tea in to brew with about, I guess, 3 tablespoons of honey (I like it just barely sweet). I just leave it out on the counter (covered) for a few hours and then stick it in the fridge.

The Female Toner tea has red raspberry leaf, strawberry leaf, nettle and other good things that are beneficial to fertility in it so that's a plus.

Thanks for the recipe. I'll have to pick up the teas next time I'm at the store. It sounds like its good to drink even without the Vitex. I've had the Passion before and I think I really liked it I love hibiscus.

I have been pregnant 3 times. My last two times getting pregnant I took vitex and stopped once I found out. With both of the pregnancies the baby died right before 8 weeks. I've wondered if the two had anything to due with each other. I've been screened for some other m/c causes. Are any of you taking vitex plan to continue during pregnancy?

Oh mama I'm so sorry for both of your losses. Do let us know if you find out anything from your screening.

I was thinking that I would continue to take it for the first part of pregnancy. I am planning to see a NP though and will base my final decision on their info.

Do you think that stopping the Vitex caused a M/C or taking the Vitex altogether?

Christine,
I just wanted to say that your ds is really cute. He's only 2 month older then my ds.

Well here's my theory. I think taking the vitex pumped up my progesterone enough to get pregnant and maybe my body could olny hold on to it for a while longer. I should either not take it at all and let my body naturally get back into shape or take the vitex under the guidance of a naturalpath(?) and stop slowly maybe after 13 weeks. I change my mind about what to do daily. I'd love to hear what your naturalpath tells you.

Everything I read online about vitex says it shouldn't be taken during preg; so some suggest stopping at ov just in case. But there are others who have taken it full cycle, apparently, and then stop with a positive pg test. http://womens-place.com/ttc/vitex.php is one of the links. There are lots of others' testimonials on it out there. I just started vitex last cycle (1st half) and AF came today, but I'll take it again for 2 weeks once period is over.

How about progesterone cream, starting at ov and continuing til AF or throughout pregnancy? My long-ago nat doc told me to do that in my future efforts, as I was moving away from him, and I have been and plan to continue, so maybe that can smooth out the up and down progest levels caused by vitex.
