Babies need to be assisted in order to make it out?

When I went over my birth plan with my CNM part of it was that I didn't want the baby's head or neck to be manipulated during birth, basically that I would prefer for her to just sort of "catch" the baby. She said something to the effect that babies needed to be physically turned or assisted in some way during delivery. That doesn't seem right. That's not really true is it? And if not, then why does she think that? Just curious.

I don't think so, what about the foetal ejection reflex? I don't see why there's any reason to manipulate the baby.. People squat babies out without help all the time.

Sounds like bunk to me. At my birth center, the vast majority of babies work their way out in the birthing tubs without any help. If there's a problem, of course they're assisted, but a normal healthy birth involves the baby just kind of coming out.

It isn't true for the vast majority of babies. They will rotate themselves and be born just fine without the need of any hands on them. I think that many care providers think babies need that help because that is what they were trained to do and they just don't know any different.

Jeez, how would people UC if babies need to be assisted out?!?!?!?

It makes me sick the way providers at the local hospital here will basically reach in and try to yank a baby out, typically giving mom a good tear on the way. :

Someone should have told this twin mom that. It looks like she did it all on her own...

Warning: You seen a crowning baby being born very clearly. (Also, the breech is assisted.)

Babies will turn on their own and do not need anyone messing with them. Maybe she will agree to not touching unless a certain amount of time, or something else happens etc... then you'll at least get a chance at the birth you want.

Isn't that a neat video?

bah!

but this is a common theme with most providers, home or hospital.

all the hands on vs hands off (this is from the start of pushing until the body emerges) shows that there is no difference in outcome. but i can tell you that hands-off feels better for the mom than hands-on!

absolutley agree. I was mistakenly under the impression that HB midwives didn't touch the baby and never discussed it with her. Boy was I surprized durring birth when she began tugging on him. :

Wow. I'm not sure I would trust a MW who didn't "know how to" leave my body alone during birth!

Too, I can say anecdotally that, from what I've seen, the hands off births (babies) seem to need a LOT less chiropractic/cranial sacral work to be able to nurse properly!

Ummmm. No.

My DP caught my first two kids, I caught the last one. No manipulation.

I might start interviewing some other MW's if I were you.

Just out of curiosity, I wonder how she'd explain unaccompanied births (like my DS#2) where there isn't a birth professional present. How does she think they come out??

nice video, why don't care providers know how to leave women alone anymore?! Thanks for the responses!
