I know this has been gone over before. But I need some more specific answers.
I definitely had oversupply and overactive letdown in the early days. DS would have periodic varying degrees of green poop as well, but no blood and was fairly easy going. Based upon the recommendations of my friends, I started block feeding to regulate supply better and get rid of the green poop. It seemed to help, but again, varying degrees of green poop. I forget when exactly, but I stopped block feeding maybe a month or so ago because I started to worry that I was losing my supply (which is probably nuts but after having enough to feed probably 2 kids, it felt that way to me).
Anyway, in the last month or so, DS's poops have been green. NO varying shades, they're green. Not usually mucousy, just that normal BF baby poop consistency for his age. Maybe once or twice it looked mucousy. And again, never bloody.
I started considering a dairy elimination diet to see if that was the culprit of the wholey green poop. I lasted 4 days, then cheated at my birthday dinner at my mom's house (she bought me ice cream cake even though I told her I was dairy free). Lasted 5 more days before MIL sabotaged it with her birthday dinner (again, knew I was dairy free, but she made cheese lasagna, meatballs, and had ice cream cake for dessert - there was no escaping dairy at her house). During both stretches, his poop was more yelllowy-green than all green, though.
I'm at a loss. I love cheese and I'm having a hard time finding foods to eat that I like since I'm also a picky eater. Each time my progress gets sabotaged, I find it all that much harder to return. And I"m wondering if that's even the culprit?
At the end of last week, we started DS on a VERY small amount of solids: sweet potatoes. Now his poop is brown. Is it possible the sweet potatoes are masking the green poop problem? Or was it the dairy free, even though it got sabotaged? Or is it I'm overanalyzing since he's not having bloody or mucousy stools? Is it really oversupply fore-/hindmilk imbalance still?
I should add that I only drink raw milk and much (but not all) of the cheese we eat is raw as well. I was eating a lot of ice cream during the last month (not raw milk) that I could easily cut out and replace with sorbet. I just miss cheese so much.
I guess I'm just looking for direction. I know many of you have had to give up more, and have done so successfully. But I don't want to give up dairy if I don't need to.
How do you know your child is reacting severely (or not) to dairy? I've seen many of you post about this but how can you tell?
And am I making any sense?
ETA: I wanted to add that DS has had no problems putting on weight. He was 9 lbs 3 oz at birth and at his 4 month checkup, he was 19.5 lbs. So definitely no "failure to thrive" there. He's mostly a happy boy, as long as you're close by or holding him. A little clingy, but many babies are.
