Maybe it doesn't matter I might be overly concerned. The thing is that I am in Lexington, KY and I'm not sure how many people I could get to attend another workshop when there are some going on already every once in awhile. It's not that big of a city for one thing, and for another...it's not like there is an ENORMOUS demand for doulas and/or doula training.

But who knows. Maybe in a couple months that could all change.
yeah I don't think you'd be stepping on any toes. She'd probably enjoy doing a different training. There isn't really any dissent between doulas of other orgs (that I have noticed) and which training you took only matters when someone new is wanting to start and they ask which org you went with and why

at least that's my opinion....

I took a DONA training and found it very disappointing. I wanted to take ALACE because my midwife felt it was much better training, but they weren't training anywhere near me at the time. I find DONA practice restrictions very uncomfortable. I don't feel comfortable doing extensive home labor support without some level of clinical skills to be sure it is okay to stay home until late active labor as many of my natural birth clients choose to. I ended up doing a one year apprenticeship with a midwife instead of ALACE, not certifying with anyone (I tell my clients my previous clients ARE my certification and provide many references as needed) and I use my clinical skills (taking heart tones, blood pressure, vaginal exams- only if requested...). I recertify in neonatal resuscitation regularly and feel prepared for the rare emergency transport scenario (severe fetal distress) or precipitous birth(vbac mama who hemmorhaged after--midwife got there about 1/2 too late to catch). I have had one of each of these scenarios and DONA training alone would not have prepared me to handle them.

Vote for DONA

Have to vote for DONA! I had such a fabulous training and continued support during my 4+ years of doula'ing. Training and certification process is straight-forward and prepares you well. The conferences are fantastic, quarterly magazine and monthly e-newsletters keep you connected to the doula world and let you know what is going on. There is nothing like real-world experience to hone your doula skills, but DONA sets you up for success!

As a DONA state rep, I have to say DONA as well of course. As a doula one learns to read emotional sign posts and other things so that you do not have to rely on clinical skills to know when to go to the hospital. Moms who are empowered to trust and listen to their bodies know when they need to go to the hospital. Good luck with your choice.
