Plugs?

Since this is my first pregnancy, I know nothing about mucous plugs.

The books I have read don't address them, except in passing.

So how will I know when I lose mine? How big are they?

Feel free to add anything I might have forgotten to ask.

All I know is, a guy DH works with once told him that once he's seen a mucous plug come out, he'll never eat Chevy's corn pudding again.

Hope this isn't TMI, but when I lost mine last time it looked like a wad of snot about the size of a quarter. There was no mistaking it.

I've never seen either of mine. But I saw a client's once and it looked like a chunk of yellowish/grayish/white snot in the bottom of the toilet.

It looked like I blew my nose in my underwear. There was also some gray stringy stuff. Yuck.

This is the description I've heard the most. I never saw mine with DD, but I think I MIGHT be losing it in bits these last couple of days? Or else I'm just having weird thick discharge. I've also heard it can be tinged with pink or red.

Both mine were a bit different but similar as well.

With dd I noticed that when I wiped it felt really really slick no matter how much I was wiping it wasnt getting better. So curious little me got the hand mirror down and had a look see What I saw was a big bunch of mucus at my vaginal opening that was as white as snow. Of course I couldnt leave it there so I got the toilet paper and "really" went in there after it. When I did manage to get a good hold of it and pulled I could actually feel it tugging my cervix : I got what I could and left the rest alone.

I kept going back to check every 30 min or so and it kept coming. I lost more of it over the next 3 days and finally went into labor. Since the plug remakes itself constantly you can loose bits of it for weeks.

With ds again the really slick feeling and but this time without the tuggy pully on the cervix I lost it over 2 weeks time it was as white as snow to.

I never saw the plug with bloody show until I was well into labor with either.

Wow, 4 kids and this is info to me. I went two weeks early with DS and I do not remember any plug, I do remember some bloody show though!

Mine was slick too- I just noticed that when I wiped, there was a slippery feel and when I pulled the TP away, there was a small glob on it that looked like clear jello with just a few streaks of blood running through it.

I was excited because I had had my membranes stripped 2 days before and I thought, "Oh, good, now I'm in labor!!" and called my MW all excited. She laughed and said, "Call me in a week to 10 days when you are really in labor and there's no mistaking it." I was totally confused, but she was right- I went 7 days overdue! So, losing the plug doesn't really mean that labor is imminent.

I have been having weird thick discharge on and off for close to 2 weeks. That is why I started wondering about it.

I didn't know that it rebuilds itself. I guess I always imagined some kind of a hard plug.

I needed that this morning.
I second the "it's looks like snot" answer. It really does look like you blew your nose. It can be thick and gelatinous (yum yum!).

you can get big globs of yellow/white/green mucus any time during pregnancy. this is not your mucus plus, it is regular CM that has congealed together...it is normal and plentiful (or can be a one time occurence)

your true plug will have blood/pink tinge to it...and it does regenerate

Even out of all of my deliveries, I have never been lucky enough to see mine.... but dh has!

(and the above information is not my words, it is dr sears and my midwife books! LOL)

I've never seen anything like a plug/bloody show --- and it probably would freak me out

it totally freaked dh out when he found it in the toilet!

(I had gotten into the tub and didn't flush because the water was running, and then forgot about it...he went in and found it and freaked! )

I've never seen it either. I did have some bloody show with my oldest, but no "loss of plug."
