Jon and Kate Plus 8 - Page 12

No editors overdubbed the words, "I wash the kitchen floor 3 times a day," or her sexist remark to Joel, or her screaming at Jon in the toy store.

Sure, they pick the most "dramatic"/controversial/best TV, but first of all, you have to give them that footage to pick from, and secondly, I can't imagine that Jon and Kate are that disturbed by how they're coming off if they're signing up for more seasons.

However, they would not be on TV if there wasn't something to watch, and watching a perfectly run household just isn't as entertaining. I think it's great that they don't spank, and that they strive to eat organic and homemade. I think most of us agree that she isn't the world's worst mother.

The biggest problem I have with her is that when her kids grow up, they aren't going to remember that she mopped the floors three times every day (unless the part of that that they remember is that they were relegated to another room three times a day), but they will remember the fun (non-forced) good times that they had together. Kate seems so focused on forcing memories, and not so much on the act of MAKING the memories. (The episode with the pumpkin carving comes to mind. She couldn't just enjoy it, she had to be all concerned about cleaning up before Jon was even done, and the kids were clearly having a good time.)

I'm not even going into how completely nasty she is to Jon. You can't blame the way she treats him on editing. She's had a chance to watch herself on TV, and acknowledge that that is an inappropriate way to treat her husband, and she continues to do so. Free Jon!
Just want to pipe in my agreement. I've only seen a few episodes of this show, but it hurt to watch it. She's so mean to him!

I'd really like to watch a typical "day in the life", like they did last season with the episodes about grocery shopping and when the twins went off to school during the day. If I were her, I'd negotiate with the producers - they need to pay for an hour of therapy a week in exchange for trips to Chocolate World.
That's what I would like to see, just a typical day would be more interesting to me than all the drama w/the trips.

I really don't understand why people are always touting the $100k cost of a 4 year degree. There are many reputable public colleges that cost less than $3000 a semester for tuition. My husband went to Queens College, the "poor man's harvard," and he got an excellent education. He also received financial aid so I think in total he paid about $5000 for his degree. He is extremely intelligent and well educated, and no, it didn't cost him $100k!

Have you never had a moment of frustration where you just yelled at your DH? Obviously Kate has a touch of OCD when it comes to her cleaning habits, she pretty much says she does in the halloween episode where she has to clean the table in the middle of the kids pumpkin carving. If Kate had been a mom posting how she struggled with her OCD here moms would be understanding and forgiving but because she is shown on a television show people seem to enjoy dissecting her behavior and criticizing her instead of sympathizing with her. It seems that no matter who you are, whether that be Michelle Dugger or Kate Gosselin, you are aparantly enemy #1 here ad MDC. Honestly I would bet Kate would fit in pretty well here with her organic food preferences and her desire to raise her kids without the assistance of a nanny or community help.

Of course we've all done things that aren't "fit for public consumption," if you will. But that's part of the price that you pay when you go on TV--you're under a microscope--good, bad, and ugly. But, to say it's just editing is a bit dishonest, in my mind. I've acted just as ugly as the next person, but I'm not going to blame it on anything other than the fact that I *chose* to act ugly in that moment. That's all I'm saying.

I hardly think anyone's suggesting that Kate is "enemy #1." Some of us just disagree with her behavior. And some think it's fine. I hope we can disagree with our opinions on the show without marginalizing someone else's reaction or opinion.

For me, having grown up in a household with lots of verbal abuse, the show makes me sad at times. Other people don't see it through that lens. And that's OK. Some of us see her organization/cleaning stuff as a inspirational. And some of us see it as a detriment to her family. And it's interesting to hear why different people come to their opinions. But I don't want to get into whole thing of criticizing others for their opinions or the fact that they even have them. :

Actually she said if she could, she would have a sitter there every day. And is it really AP to refuse nanny or community help? I never thought it was .

Not saying that having help is not AP just that I recall having read threads here that have criticized parents of higher order multiples that have a parade of volunteers coming and going from their house, as if they are not raising their own children. Honestly, I cannot imagine raising 8 kids that young alone - having 2 children under 2 for a few months seriously was hard for me. Not sure how Kate is as sane as she is - I would have lost it a long time ago if I was in her position!

Well, I'm not talking about the kids going to college NOW. I'm talking about when the 3-year-olds are there, all six at once (in theory). It will be profoundly more expensive in 18-20 years than it is now, THAT is where the $100k comes in. And yes, those averages were for public.

Surely no-one's suggesting that Jon and Kate pay for university tuition for their kids??

Why the snark?

Hey you all, I wanted to let you know that the posts speculating about the racial make-up of the children have been removed. It's a tough line to draw, since we're talking about a reality TV show, but I discussed it with some other mods and admins, and we all felt that discussion crossed the line into invasion of privacy, which is against the UA. If you have any questions, please PM me!

My thoughts exactly!!!

If the show's editors are purposefully making her look mean to Jon, then they are making a mistake. It's the reason I won't watch the show anymore. I can't take her screaming.

I do enjoy the "Kids by the Dozen" series. At least when they interview families that show loyalty and respect for all members of the family.

I love the kids by the dozen series! And really, I have absolutely nothing against large families (obviously, since we plan on having more!). I just really dislike how they treat each other and how they interact with the kids. They don't seem to have a lot of joy, and that makes me sad. However, if I had six toddlers, I might have a difficult time finding my happy place too.

I don't know what your ddddc means, but it's hilarious!

Hee. There was a moderators' retreat last August, but I couldn't swing air fare to Santa Fe. We were trying to look at possibilities for funding transporation to the next retreat, and I might have jokingly offered to sell one of my kids.

You know you have a problem when you can't stop watching this show because Kate's organizational skills are so inspiring! lol I only have one kid, and yet I'm striving to be so put together. Of course, I have no idea what their life is like when the cameras are off
