birth plans

I know this has come up before...but does anyone care to share theirs?

I'm suppose to have mine done by tomorrow :but, its not happening. I'm trying to be short and to the point. I've got some very particular requests, and a letter from our pedi that I need to somehow incorporate into it. My MW and DH are very on board with it all (same MW from DS) but, its the rn's I worry about!

Well, I'm going to a birth center and they'll pretty much be doing things the way I'd want anyway. So, I only put the things that were most important to me on mine. My doula and yoga instructor said that most nurses will just disregard your birth plan or get irritated by it if it's too long. Keep it under a page and only put what's most important to you on it. I only had a few points on mine:

-Minimal vaginal checks
-I will push when I have the urge to push and not before. If I need to rest for several hours after being complete, then that's what will happen.
-No AROM.
-Will have dh present via webcam if possible if he's not available in person.
-My children will be present; dd1 may be interested in cutting the cord after birth.
-Will refuse antibiotics if GBS+, but will consider if membranes are ruptured over 12 hours or if there are signs of infection (i.e. fever).
-No Hep B shot after birth.

I think that's really all I put, not necessarily in that order though.

Oh Kelli!

I am from another DDC but know Kelli IRL!

So for DS my Birth Plan was WAY TOO LONG AND WORDY!

Mine will be something like this.
- Don't offer me pain meds.
- Nurse who supports natural birth.
- Allow me to push in various positions (for me that is KEY I liked squatting!)
- Let the cord stop pulsing before cutting.
- Natural means for augmentation before drugs.
- intermittent monitoring

I gotta continue thinking.. I think the hypnobirthing book I gave you has an EXTENSIVE list on pg 287. So pick and choose... lots of things to say if you want!

Chat later!

Here's ours--we're still editing/revising, but it gives you an idea:

Our Birth Plan

As this is a planned VBAC birth, we are looking forward to an active, positive and natural birth. Our desire is to give birth vaginally, with as little medical intervention as possible. We want to participate in this birth to the fullest, with the wonderful support and encouragement of our birthing team.

We have listed our preferences below; these decisions have been made after much research, consultation and thought. Therefore, your help in attaining these goals is very much appreciated.

LABOR:
•Maintain mobility (walking or rocking or up to bathroom etc.)
•We prefer no restrictions (eat & drink to comfort)
•We do not want an IV unless Aimee becomes dehydrated.
•No time limit on duration of labor. No inducement.
•Minimal internal exams.

DELIVERY:
•We do not wish to have continuous fetal monitoring unless it is required by the condition of the baby.
•We would like to choose Aimee’s positions for pushing and giving birth
•We have been studying the Bradley Method and plan to give birth naturally without medication. Please do not offer pain medication; we will request it if we feel that it is necessary.
•We would prefer avoid pitocin use during labor; if labor appears to stall, we would like to be allowed to try walking, changing position and other natural methods of restarting labor.
•We would not like a routine episiotomy. Please use hot compresses and oil massage for the perineum at crowning instead.
•Please do not cut the umbilical cord until pulsing ceases. Chris would like to cut the cord.
•Unless absolutely necessary, we would like to avoid a Cesarean section.
•We would appreciate having the room as quiet as possible when the baby is born.
We would like to have the baby placed on Aimee stomach/chest immediately after delivery, and for breastfeeding to begin as soon as possible.
•Please do not apply eye ointment.

POSTPARTUM:
•We will be exclusively breastfeeding. Please no pacifiers, formula, or glucose water.
•We will be rooming in at all times. Chris or Aimee will be accompanying the baby for tests and procedures.

THANK YOU for your kind attention, understanding, and help in making this a wonderful experience!

Here's the short one... The longer one is more for the OB and the on call pedi going into specific procedures should I have a "big" baby. I'll post that too, but that one is several pages as opposed to the one page below.

My Name: Anna My Due Date: November 7, 2007

My Address: XXX XXX Rd My Partner: Joshua

XXXXX, VA

My Doctor: Dr. W Other Support persons: My Mom

Pediatrician: Dr.B

Upon arrival to the hospital, I wish to have my support person(s) with me at all times.

Labor:

* I would like to be free to walk around and change position during labor.
* I would like to eat and drink during the first stage of labor.
* I do not wish to have an IV unless I become dehydrated. I will agree to a heparin lock.
* I do not wish to have continuous fetal monitoring
* I realize many pain medications exist, and will ask if I feel I need them.
* Please keep the door closed during labor.
* Please, no residents or students attending my birth.

Augmentation of labor:

If induction or augmentation is indicated, I would like to try natural techniques first with the guidance of my practitioner, such as:

* Breast stimulation
* Walking
* Herbs
* Any other non-medical methods

If medical methods are necessary, I prefer to try, in this order:

* Stripping membranes
* Rupturing membranes

I would like to avoid an episiotomy and risk tearing unless I’m having a medical emergency, and would like local anesthetic for repairs.

After Delivery:

* Unless there is a medical emergency, I would like to nurse immediately.
* Please let the cord stop pulsing before clamping, and allow my partner or support person to cut the cord.
* I will sign any necessary waivers to permit me to be with my baby continuously.
* I would like all newborn procedures delayed and preformed in my presence.
* Under no circumstances shall this child be given formula, artificial nipples, teats, pacifiers, or soothies without express written permission. Any action to the contrary will result in charges of assault.
* I will sign any waivers if needed to decline the administration of eye drops and delay vaccines.
