Anyone sleep on a futon mattress?

Do they stay firm? How long do they last?

I need something better for my back and co-sleeping where the baby will not sink into a hole next to me. We have a futon couch and I like it's firmness. The matresses seem more affordable for what I am looking for.

Thanks!

We just got ds one, and I can't believe how awesome it is! It feels so good on my back. It is 8" thick, pure cotton, with a layer of wool on top.

It needs to be flipped every now and again, but I'm told they last a good long time.

They last forever!
I still have one thats at least 25 years old, we use it in the guest room now, but it's as firm and comfy as the day I bought it- for $89!
Buy a good washable cover.

Not now, but I did for years. Ours lasted until the remodel crew did something to it...

I just ordered an 8" thick futon from Northern Naturals. I would have liked the organic one but couldn't afford it. (Oh, and I got an untreated wood futon frame/base at Ikea for $54.)

I've slept on futons before and as long as it's a thicker one, it was comfy.

I'm just wondering if a regular mattress encaser will work on a futon. I need something to protect against dust mites and I want the entire thing encased.

I've been sleeping on the same futon mat for at least eight years. I love it and can't stand sleeping in a "real" bed.

I used a futon mattress, wasn't expensive but it didn't last long. I was, however, rather heavy so its not a surprise............ It was great for cosleeping though.

Definitely, as long as it's a thick one! Ours is 8" and it's very comfy

We slept on an old futon mattress we got from a friend for a couple of years. After I got pg, we bought one of these, which is probably on the thin side for a lot of people (3-4"), but works awesome for us and is a marvelous space saver in our 650sq ft 1 br apt.

WOW! A 8 inch queen size is 195.00?! Do you know if these are firm? I tried to call the company but noone picked up. The firm queen size at a local store on sale is 480.00.

We lived on them, a wall2wall futons right on the floor, throughout our marriage till last year (when we moved out of NY ... to a place where the bugs are too big for me to sleep on the floor anymore )

Anyway, they're wonderful and I miss sleeping on them very much. (We've bought actual beds and mattresses now for the first time in our relationship, and they're just not as comfortable as futons on the floor, plain & simple. Sigh.)

The only thing is with futons you have to take care of them a little and you'll get a very long comfortable life out of them. Meaning flip them over ever few weeks, and also turn them around, so that they don't become bumpy from your weight being distributed the same way on 'em all the time. YKWIM?

Like, every other week, flip it over, then two weeks later rotate it 180 degrees, then two weeks later flip it over again, then two weeks later rotate it 180 degrees ...

I mean, you don't have to do that, but they'll stay very comfortable for a very long time if you do. It's like taking good care of them.

Get a thick one. We have a cheapo 3 or 4" one right now. Sitting and sleeping on it *on the futon frame* sucks because the frame is hard, the mattress is thin, and I have SPD (symphysis pubis dysfunction, not Sensory Processing - that's the one ds has). When I met dh he had a nice THICK (8") futon mattress and a high quality futon (cost him close to $500.) and I HATED the idea of a futon! Made him sell it.

Now, I'm kicking myself and we're looking for another good futon. :

Anyway, I think if the mattress is on the floor it would be super comfy, even though it's thin.

Try it!

I'll be the odd gal out...I slept on an excellent quality futon mattress for two years...and was miserable every night of those two years until I got a proper mattress

I have a white lotus futon, and I am not all that thrilled about it. The first one I got from them was THICK and comfy, and this one just isn't as good. I have slept on futons though for over ten years, and regular beds just don't cut it. I'll be in the market for a new one soon.

Oh, and I got a cheap vinyl protector thing from walmart and it DOES encase the whole mattress. Important because it's hard to clean baby pee out of a 100% futon.

Do NOT put the futon on the floor unless you pick it up and air it out often... your body produces moisture that doesn't dissipate and if you have wood floors, they will warp. This is the voice of experience speaking!

I had a king futon for years, and it gradually got beaten flatter and flatter. We got some pieces of upholstery foam (at a craft store, like Michael's), 4" thick, and put it under the futon. It made a HUGE difference!

The frame makes a big difference. If you just get the cheapo pipe frame with thin bars 6" apart, you will be hurting. Get good wood slats that provide lots of support.

Good luck!

I'm with you, hated it. But I had a cheap one.

My DS sleeps on a futon and I actually sleep better co sleeping with him than on our 'expensive' mattress.

I love futons and I'd really like one for our king bed.

My 3 1/2 yr. old daughter sleeps on a twin futon-it was a nice transition from co sleeping for her. She loves it!

Daughter of Kali, we cover ours with something called "Protect A Bed"- it's for regular bed but also fits the futon fine.
