Anyone or their SO know anything about heating?

Specifically hot water heat/boiler issues?

We have had NUMEROUS leaks (bought a foreclosure house... the pipes had freeze damage) my dad has fixed them all... we are still weeding out the weak spots in the plumbing.

We now have a leak near the boiler and the leak is at some sort of control box.... no clue what it is or what function it serves... any insight would be great...

Here is a photo of the part I am talking about. The green highlight mark is where the leak is coming from...

Are you on well water? Do you have a softener/ph adjustment on the well water? (There are also some "bad" copper pipes from the 80s that develop leaks anyway.)

I am not sure what the box is, but you can ask here: http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/

DH thinks maybe a thermostat or pressure shut off because the part under it looks like maybe a valve.
