Where, exactly, does the mucous plug come from/sit?

I've been having constant goop ranging from shiny and clear to goopy and green to brown to pink with blood for 10 days now. I guess I thought that the mucous plug was one 'thing' and once it broke down/released it would be gone. I swear every time I go to the bathroom I wipe out long strings of pink or yellowish looking egg white like mucous. I know it means nothing--that birth can be hours to weeks away, but sheesh, when I first saw it early last week I was like, "Woohoo, let's get the show on the road!" and now, I'm just annoyed that I have to change the pad every time I go to the bathroom---or sit in wetness...

My husband and i were trying to decide last night if the mucous plug rests outside the cervix, inside the cervix.. or what? Does anyone know?

Inside the cervix I think. I've been loosing mucous for weeks. I can feel the head now through my 1 cm dilated cervix, so I'm pretty sure the plug is gone. I only saw blood tinge once, and the rest has been yellowy. This is how it has always been for me. I've never seen a "plug" or a bloody show.

I'm the same way. Wiping bloody snot every other time I go to the bathroom. I was looking for one big "plop", but I don't think it's happening.

a good diagram of it!

I believe it can regenerate though, if you lose it early in the pregnancy.

Awesome diagram! Thank you. It looks like there isn't much in the diagram but sure seems to be a lot coming out!

Very interesting! I haven't ever lost mine till at least 5cm or so. This time it was the EWCM, long stringy kind. At that point, I was already dilated enough to feel baby's head *through* the cervix. Wonder if that makes a difference - how your cervix dilates? Hmm... so many interesting questions! Wonder if anyone has answers?

you can also get mucousy looking stuff after you have sex, and it could totally be brown or bloody if you spot a little afterwards. every time sweetie and i gio i get the snot. it's so sexy. my natural birth class instructor said the mucous plug could have tiny veins of brown/red in it, and i got some of that after my last cervix check. i dunno if it was just going to come out anyway or if that helped it.
