I threw away all my lipstick today!

After reading the new report about lead in most lipsticks, I tossed my Body Shop and Burt's Bees Lipsticks today (both had lead in the study, as did nearly all lipsticks). Argh. Not happy about this. My mom and SIL all had to toss theirs also.

I found 4 listed elsewhere as lead-free, so I guess I begin testing out these brands now.

do you have a link to all the lipsticks that were found to have lead?

They tested 33 name brands and found lead in 61% of them. Here is a link to the pdf report. While the levels of lead are not enormous, I certianly would likke to have NO lead in my lipstick!

Haven't we known this for years?

Thanks! Off to look at that link. Thankfully, I don't have any of the lipsticks you listed.

Sheesh. I'm really glad I don't wear lipstick. What about lip balms or gloss, though?

It;s in the pigments, so something clear is lickly safe, but mine was the Burt's Lip Shimmers and they showed positive results for lead. $30 of lipstick in the trash this morning. Mineral Fusion is advertised as lead-free so I am going to head into Manhattan to buy some of that tomorrow I guess.

My reading suggests that this information has been available, at least in part. Some email scams claim they cause cancer and such. The industry says it is a safe amount. I would like no lead in my lipstick personally. I buy organic and natural lipsticks because of other ingredients I don't want to ingest, not knowing I was still getting lead. Yuck.

That's a funny typo

I'm surprised about Burt's Bees, that's lame. I don't wear lipstick, but that's what I would have tried if I'd needed some for some reason.

I'm not sure I can go out in public without my Burt's shimmers!!! I have seriously white lips. How depressing.

that is a good typo. My baby keeps waking up and so I have run back to the bedroom a dozen times, increasing typos!

They tested the Merlot (I wore Rasin) and it was on the higher end. I threw away three tubes today - one brand new. I am depressed also!

IN other news, Mineral Fusion at Whole Foods appears to be actually lead free and my SIL is following up with Aveda which aslo seems to be safe.

Burts is about the only half way natural brand I can find in my town. Body shop and Aveda are over and hour away. I was so happy with the color (coffee) and price. I'm always licking my lips and reapplying, too.

Oh, Burt, I expected better from you!!

Honestly, is anything safe these days?!? To have even my BB lip shimmers unsafe, what a complete bummer.

Yeah, when I saw the report I thought for sure my products would not be there and then there they were almost as bad as all the others. I expected more also!

Burt's?! Say it isn't so!

I thought snopes proved this one wrong?

No, snopes says that lead does not cause cancer. An email used to claim that lead in lipstick was causing cancer. Snopes argues that lead in lipstick is not dangerous and while they are welcome to keep wearing their leaded lipstick, I am looking for an unleaded version.

It's not a hoax, it's a scientific study by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.

Perhaps not a health concern, but I read in a book called "The Secret House" that lipstick contains a sort of acid to etch microscopic pits into your lips, so the stain can go deeper and so have longer staying power, and that this somehow over time bleaches out the natural color in the lips.
