Wellbutrin and breastfeeding?!

Thread Starter
I am 39weeks and 5days pregnant. I have been on Wellbutrin since about 4 months along. It was a do or die sort of situation (I'm sure many of you understand that). I am wondering if I can continue to take it while breastfeeding? I don't want to take any chances with going off and having PPD, but if it is really bad for baby maybe I can try something else?

FWIW-I tried all the natural type "cures" before starting on prescription meds. Some cases of Depression are just too much for nature alone.

TIA for any advice or BTDT stories!

YES. There are lots of moms here on WB and nursing. It's fine. Talk to your doctor and pediatrician if you are concerned, but it is really fine.

ETA: you do NOT have to justify your choice to go on meds. That is a perfectly great decision and no one whould ever make you feel badly for going that route.

I have read some moms/LCs and Dr. Hale (author of medication and mothers milk) feel it may effect supply level in some moms. So if you do take it keep that in the back of your mind and nurse, nurse, nurse to help with supply to get it off to a good start after the birth and be aware of signs that you may have low supply. Also, get help from a good LC or LLL in the beginning so any bf problems won't contribute to low supply. I know moms who have taken it with no effect on supply. What dose are you on? If on 300mg maybe you could lower to 150mg after birth during the first few weeks pp and then go up if needed. From Dr. Hale's book it seems like a good choice. Call a LLL Leader/LC to read what it says on it, look up by generic name bupropion, make sure it is the 2006 edition book.

Didn't affect mine, I've been taking 150 mg\1 per day for 3+ yrs. That's through 2 pg's and one bf relationship. It may cause baby jitters but that's the most I've seen happen so far and not with the EBF baby, with the FF baby before him.

(in utero exposure can cause jitters at birth depending on baby and amount of dosage).

It's safe to use.
