M & P soap making- need help deciding on a base

Soap making is really new to me! I'm really ready to do this ( been thinking and reading and talking about it since january). There are so many bases out there for melt and pour- how do I know which ones to use with which herbs, oils etc?

I want to make a gardens recipe soap. It has pumice powder, citrus essential oils, corn meal and bentonite clay in it. Would a glycerine white soap base be what I want? Does it make a difference what the base is? Also- how many bars of soap does 1 lbs of m & p make?

Thank you!

Any kind would be fine really. It just depends on preferance. Depending on where you get it some come with it already scented so I would make sure it wasn't already scented. If you are just going to Michaels or something I liked the kind with avacado oil in it...

Most molds are about 4 oz so 1 lb would make about 4 bars. Or if you just plan on dumping it into some container or something then chopping it up well you can make whatever size bars you want.

As a side note, I found that a tennis ball container makes a good mold for round soaps and then you can just slice them off. A Pringles container works nicely too, but they're harder to get clean without destroying.

I've tried many m&p bases and some of them STINK! Some are nicer then others.

I would avoid the Lavender Lane, Cedar Vale and the stuff at Michaels.

I would recommend

soapcrafters
wholesalesoapsuppliesplus
sfcorp

Happy soaping!
