Short version: how does block feeding work with pumping? Do you only pump one side during each pumping session?
Long version:
I have had overactive letdown/oversupply/foremilk-hindmilk imbalance issues with all three kids. I have all the classic symptoms - baby gasping/spluttering, milk shooting out, gassy baby, vast amounts of spitup, green poops, etc. I knew about block feeding (feeding on one side only for ~6 hours, then switching to the other side for 6 hours, etc.), but didn't start doing it with this baby until yesterday. He is 7 weeks old, and I've been back at work full time since he was 3.5 weeks old.
Even after only one day of block feeding, I've already seen improvements. My baby doesn't gasp and splutter and choke every time he latches on. He's still spitting up a ton though.
Baby sleeps with me, and is free to nurse whenever he wants all night long. He'll usually have his last nursing at 6 or 7 in the morning. I go to work and pump at approximately 11 am and 3 pm. I get home around 6 pm and nurse Baby whenever he wants to. How would I pump in order to continue the concept of block feeding during the day? Would I just pump one side during each feeding? I fear that I may swing too far the other way and end up with not enough milk. Typically I can pump 8-10 ounces in a 10-15 minute pumping session. But the milk appears to be mostly foremilk. After it's chilled, there's very little 'cream'. I'm hoping that the block feeding/pumping will help correct the foremilk/hindmilk imbalance. But I don't want to risk the chance of losing my supply!
