Wow, the cord broke before the baby was out - is that normal? (I don't have sound on my computer right now.) That was really cool!

I was wondering about the cord breaking too?! Very cool though!

Yeah, according to the narration, it is normal. Apparently they have a short cord to prevent strangulation in utero, but can survive up to twenty minutes inside after the cord snaps. Looks like mama elephant's labor was just over an hour. Nice!

Thanks for the link, Klines! DD loved seeing the baby born! (she was much more interested in the birth of the baby elephant than in the birth pics of baby humans that I tried to show her earlier... oh, well... )

I couldn't get the sound to work, so I missed the narration!
Glad you enjoyed it, I really thought it was cool to watch!

I wonder if my baby stays in long enough, if she/he will walk within minutes of being born like the elephant. How long would that take? Another year of gestation? DS walked at about a year.

If you think about it, the cord breaking in utero would be better for some animals. That baby elephant would have to drag it's afterbirth around until it fell off otherwise, no teeth for that sort of cutting job on an elephant. The blood would attract predators, that could be bad for baby elephants, kwim? Ahhh...the wonder of nature's design.
