Mastitis abcess Need HELP!

After 2 weeks of dealing with my 2nd round of mastitis (DS is only 3.5 weeks old) I am really ready to stop nursing on my right side!

This time around I was put on kephlex at the ER and sent home because it was a Saturday, by Monday I was no better so I made an appointment with OB for Tuesday, and stated Clyndamicin. At my appointment he said it was abcessed and to continue the Clindamycin and keep doing the warm soaks and massage and follow up on friday. At Fridays appointment he drained the abcess by cutting an inch long incision and pushing at least 50 cc of puss out of it! (sorry I know its gross) He then packed it with stuff and told me to keep it in till monday if I could. Does that mean take it out today?, and follow up on Tuesday.

My problem is it itches and it is still oozing, How long is this going to last? Can I just stop now? Any advise is greatly appreciated.

I would greatly suggest that you have your doc culture your milk or the drainage from the abcess to determine exactly what kind of infection you are dealing with, then they can treat you with the best kind of antibiotics for that bacteria. Hope that helps (and that you feel better soon).

After it is healed up, if you start to notice that you are getting mastitis before it goes full bore you could try this -

I would use a back massager that vibrated, and mix up some castor oil with mullein and lobelia and apply it to the area that was started to become a problem. I would go back and forth between the massager with the castor oil-mullein-lobelia and the pump. This tended to get the plugged area to let go a little bit.
