I second the Susan Cooper recommendation. I LOVED those books. It incorporates Arturian legends.

Also Lloyd Alexander.

How about fanfiction?

I'm intrigued by this Dave Barry book. I LOVE Dave Barry. I am gonna have to check that one out.

These are all great recommendations, but let's keep in mind that the OP's daughter is seven. I love the Philip Pullman books (and especially his Sally Lockhart quartet) but I think they are way over the head of a 7yo.

Absolutely not. They're darker than the first couple, but that's it. Unlike Harry Potter, they stay at the same level as the series progresses.

I would agree they're beyond the first HP books, but I think Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy is around the same level as the last HP books.

Help!
Then she should love the Lloyd Alexander books, The Chronicles of Prydain - wait till she gets acquainted with Gurgi! - Lillian

"The Lightning Thief" and sequels...We're on Sea of Monsters right now. Dd is a huge mythology fan so this has been great for her.

Am I missing something? Has no one mentioned Tolkien yet, or is that too obvious? Go back to the source! The Hobbit is great for little ones. My mom read all of these to us again and again as we were growing up.

ITA with the Narnia and Prydain recs, too.

Have you guys checked out the Hogwarts Summer Correspondance School?

They have all kinds of class material using Harry Potter style and language. It's great.

That's what I was thinking about the Earthsea series. I think LeGuin is fabulous, but gosh I never thought of reading it aloud to my dds, ages 9 and 6, though we've read HP 1 and 2.

I haven't read Lloyd Alexander's series since I was @10. I'll put that on our list and check it out myself first.

Thanks OP for this thread, there have been some great ideas!

Cool - just joined. Thanks!

We went to the library today and they only had 3 of the series mentioned in this thread, and one recommended by a friend. Kenna vetoed every. single.. one. She does though want to read The Alchemyst, so I have that on reserve because they have it but haven't gotten around to putting in on the shelf. She reluctantly made the choice of Peter and the Starcatchers, only because her best friends' mom recommended it to us, but we read the first two chapters tonight and so far she "hates it".
