if your dc has unit blocks, do they play with them?

I'm thinking about getting a big set of unit blocks (aka kindergarten blocks) for my 4 yo dd and almost 2 yo ds for Christmas. I "think" they'll like them, but I'm a little concerned that they'll play with them for about two days and then they will become scattered all over the house and ignored. These blocks are not cheap! It looks like it's going to cost close to $200 to get a nice set. I'd feel really bad if they were a rarely played with toy! What do you think? If you have these blocks, do your kids like them? Do they get much use?

Well we just have the Melissa and Doug 60 unit blocks. But i can tell you my 4yo son plays with them all the time. He loves making garages and houses! I will be adding to that set for Christmas, cause he really loves them.

DD is 3 and doesn't play with them that much. She will carry on playing with them if DH or I start playing with her but they are not something she often asks for or gets out herself.

That said we also have a 10 month old who likes knocking down anything she does build. I don't think that helps

I bought blocks years ago for my two older kids and now my almost three yr old is loving them too. Ours were used for hours.

Wish I could find the company I bought them from. They were a family based buisiness and I believe, the kids were involved in helping. Also, the blocks come in large canvas tote bags with green nylon handles so we bring them up and downstairs and to other rooms pretty easily.

That's a good question, I have wondered the same thing.

I just consigned my unit blocks (M&D set - nowhere near $200!) b/c my son wasn't playing with them. He just prefers the duplo/legos instead.

My kids do but it goes in phases

but I got mine at a consignment store so it wasn't a big investment

Yes, all the time.

Same thing--phases. More now that they are school-age, actually. My DC incorporates them into the train set, the tree block set, and the doll-play. I would look for a used set-maybe e-bay. Even though they aren't an every day toy, I'm so glad we have them.

Yep! All the time! Invest in a nice storage unit where each type of block has it's place.

Interesting responses. Thanks for all the feedback! Maybe I can find a used set somewhere...
