VPK issues. Sigh.

I am SO fed up with my son's VPK teacher.
Every. Single. Time. I walk into that class, she is sitting at a desk with her head in her hands with this pissed off look on her face. She never looks happy to be there and she never interacts with the kids in a way that shows that she is interested or excited or anything of that nature.

Last year, Corbin had an awesome teacher for his 3-4yo preschool class. She taught the kids to write their names and they were reading. He came home every day excited about what he had learned. They did fun activities. He was always excited to be there.

Now, the new teacher just does what she has to. Corbin isn't learning anything. He is backpeddling on his reading. He is having behavioral problems and is just frustrated with school in general.

I think it has a lot to do with L (the new teacher). She doesn't ever act like she wants to be there. I never see her doing anything fun with the kids. The kids pretty much do whatever and she babysits.

I am going down there today to see if I can get him switched to the other class. I hope so, if not, I may have to look for another VPK school.

I am just so frustrated.

Ahh... now I see. Sorry - no advice here. We have ds in a GREAT montessori school, and he LOVES his teacher. Talks about her all the time. Mrs. W said this - Mrs. W says this is how you carry a chair, ya-da, ya-da...

But, I wouldn't want my child in a situation that wasn't good for him, kwim? Can you pull him out? Switch classrooms? Speak with the director?

I don't think I would keep my ds in a class with a teacher like that, especially if he seems to be picking up on it. That lady needs a career counselor!

Have you spoken to the principal? I'd be concerned about her behavior - it doesn't sound like she is up to teaching (for whatever reason: doesn't like it, depressed, personal issues at home, etc.). Is there a teacher's aide in the room? Maybe they are aware of the problems as well and would be another source of information...

Why not keep him home?

I'm sorry vpk isn't going well for your son. We had dd in vpk ove the summer and she loved it. Her teacher obvioulsy loved what she was doing and it was a great fit. Here in FL they only do the summer vpk at elementary schools. In our county at least there is a huge list of elementary schools as well as both public and private preschools that do vpk.

We're in the same boat with an absolutely horrible kindergarten teacher. Good luck!

The pissed off look and non-interaction would bother me a lot.

The "backsliding in reading" in a four year old would not bother me at all... Kids have a lifetime of formal learning ahead of them. He'll do great at academics when the time is right.
