Household Cleaner Substitutes

Some friends of mine are taking a college class that is requiring them to come up with a list of typical household cleaners that you could substitute for more natural/envirnomently friendly cleaners. They know that I am into this and were asking me for some ideas. But I'm still new to this! Just making the switch over to getting rid of a lot of my products (trying to use them up). And everyone around here are always so helpful I thought I'd stop in and see if anyone can give me some ideas to pass along! Thanks in advance! :

You can use baking soda and vinegar for almost anything!

For a general all purpose cleaner, use vinegar in a 1:1 ratio with water. You can throw in some essential oils for smell if you'd like. Don't use vinegar on natural surfaces like marble and granite, though, it's so acidic that it can pit the surface with long term use.

I use baking soda as an abrasive cleaner instead of things like comet.

Oven cleaners are some of THE most toxic cleaners out there. Instead, use baking soda. Fill the holes in the bottom of the oven with aluminum foil. Spray with water, sprinkle in baking soda. Spray baking soda with water a couple times (or you can just make a paste out of baking soda and water and wipe it on). Let sit over night. Scrape with a plastic putty knife if needed, otherwise wipe all the goop out and clean with a damp sponge. If you still have a white haze from the baking soda, spray with a little vinegar.

Tea tree oil is a great antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal agent. Put 50 drops in a spray bottle filled with water. Spray on problem mildew areas and don't rinse. Apply multiple times if needed.

Borax is a great substitue for many cleaners too. It can be toxic if ingested so it requires some caution. Use it as a laundry booster, to break up soap scum, etc.

Instead of windex, use a spray bottle filled with club soda. It works wonders!

I could go on but don't to bore you. I have some recipes in a Word document if you'd like them! Props to that instructor, by the way!

Have you looked at the sticky?

Do you have any specific cleaners you're asking about?

Honestly I think it's more like the commercial stuff are substitutes for the natural stuff that everybody used to clean everything with!

I use a paste of baking soda and dish soap, and a nylon scrubby thing to clean the tub AND to clean baking dishes.

One of the very very best things I've ever learned, was to add some calgon and a tiny drop of dish soap in some warm water- you can soak any greasy thing in it, and after a while it will rub off like magic. (I cleaned the filter above my stove with that- it was amazing!)
I used it to clean the greasy cupboards when I moved into this house. It did a MUCH better job than any of the chemicals that MIL brought over.
