My dd LOVES skipping and is trying to learn to skip with a rope. She doesn't have one yet, so she uses anything she can find--measuring tape, ribbon, etc. I am nervous about her tripping, but she's trying to do it with everything, anyway, which seems more dangerous. She seems to have the general idea and is pretty coordinated. How best to teach her? Are there different-sized ropes for smaller kids?

I have been wondering the same thing. my little one (almost 3.5 ) wants to jump rope too.. and uses all my ribbons to pretend.. maybe I will try it and see how she does.. I think I saw smaller ropes once, but now I dont' remember where..

We could never find a rope small enough for that age. The smallest we could find my girls could use closer to 5-6-7
Can you get her a hula hoop & skip through that?

Just get her a rope and cut it to her length. The rope ones generally you can pull them through the handles, cut and re-knot and then reinsert them into the handles. The plastic ones you can remove the beads and re-tie.
There is no lower age limit on these skills and it will depend upon wiring and motivation. Sounds like she is well motivated.
My daughter's rhythmic gymnastics class has 3 girls: DD (newly 4), a girl newly 6 and a girl turning 6 in Jan. All are well coordinated. Only one can skip rope as of the last class -- the 5.5yo. Her mom said she does it all the time at home and loves it. But they all love trying.

You could but the shortest "rope" jump rope you can find, at CVS or something, and tie (spaced) knots in it until it's the perfect size for you DD.
