my 5 yo son has shoulder length curly blonde hair.he has heard enough comments about the "little girl's beautiful hair", he loves his hair but is now in need of an alternative to the ponytail holder which has been deemed unusable because of all the well meaning and not so well meaning comments. so while we replace the belief we are looking for any suggestions on boy do's. much gratitude for any suggestions.

Most of the little boys w long hair I have seen just wear it down all the time.
I bet it is beautiful. I think little boys w long hair is adorable.

My ds is 7 and also has shoulder length, curly blond hair. He stopped wearing a ponytail for the same reason. Now, he just wears it down! He does have several friends that have long hair and none of them wear ponytails either. Go figure, long hair in a ponytail means he looks like a girl and wearing it down doesn't! Whatever, he likes it and so do we!

Ds doesn't like stuff in his hair so he wears it loose. I think bandannas or head bands would be a good option. If you are slightly handy, you can make fabric headbands by sewing a strip of fabric into a loop with one part being a section of elastic. That way you can pick out cool fabric with motifs your ds finds interesting. I think wide ones worn at the forehead look less girly than thin ones pushed farther back on the head. It'll keep the hair out of the eyes and off the neck.

a ponytail bound at the nape of the neck, or a braid or two braids or the hair braided in rows are all boyish long-hair styles.

I vote for a bandana. As for the ponytail, it might look more boyish if you part it in the middle and secure it at the very base of his neck.

I have a daughter but my dh has very long hair. I second just wearing it down or a ponytail at the nape of the neck. You might want to show your ds some images of very masculine men with long hair. Another possibility is to get him a special "masculine" ponytail holder. Some Celtic and Native American (scroll down) ones are good. Here are some neat ones that you can get in brass or nickel that aren't too terribly expensive.

Any chance of cutting a bit.
See my siggy picture, my 5 yr old has longer hair. I comb it with a watered down comb and he's off.

A pic would help me envision what might be a good solution.

Not only does my DS have long hair, he has long curly hair which now is basically dreadlocks because it is so hard to keep tangle free. He just wears it out, see my sig for a photo of how he looked this summer.

I love my DS's hair, I don't care what others think!

I vote keep it down or just wear it in the pony and tell him not to worry about what gender people think he is... he knows he is a boy.

My son who is 5 has long hair as well, but he does not care that EVERYONE that does not know him calls him a girl.
Even his great grandparents called him a her on accident?:

Funny about the ponies....My *very girly* younger sister refused to wear one as a child as it was a "boy's hairstyle."

I can't wait to have my own boy (DD has lovely curly blonde hair) and let him grow it as long as he wants!

Don't set yourself up for heartache. Out of 4 children, only my dd has curly hair. Each has a different "type" hair feel, but all have the same color.

I love little boys with long hair. A bandana is great, or a hair tie made out of a strip of leather/pleather/suede/fake suede. Hats are good too. Lots of boys have the long hair look now - I think it's adorable

My almost five year old has long, sunbleached 'surfer dude' hair, and I must admit, I'm jealous of it! LOL! He wears a bandana sometimes, if it's really hot, but sometimes I just put little braids (think, Captain Jack Sparrow...) on either side of his face, keeping the hair out of his eyes. Sometimes I trim it too, not often though.

All the guys with long hair here wear these cool colorful wide bands, just at the forehead... and my DS is now wanting his long hair back. YEA!

Your son has beautiful hair. He looks great! Thanks for sharing the pic.

My son had gorgeous, long deep red hair, with beautiful bouncy curls. He is 10, and a few months ago cut it ALL off (12 inches!!!) mostly because he was so sick of being called a girl every single time we went out (he looks nothing like a girl, except for long hair...i mean, he'd be wearing stereotypically boy clothes, and still waitresses call him a girl)...although he says its also because it was "hot", and get tangly, etc.

Usually we'd just pull it back in a ponytail at the base of his neck.

I still miss his hair.

I remember watching Lord of the Rings when I was pg and deciding that if I had a boy, I was going to grow his hair out long. Well, instead I had a girl with very curly hair first, and realized that I am TERRIBLE at fixing children's hair. So I keep her hair very, very short (which is fine with her), and people call her a boy all the time. And even though ds's hair is straight, I still give him a buzz cut. Maybe this third kid will have good hair that I can grow out long.

My son is almost 5 and has never had a haircut. He wont wear a pony tail in his hair; he likes it just to hang and flow. Even though his dad has the same long hair and wears it in a pony tail everyday, ds is still not having it. He'll only let me put it in for cetain events like aikido class or a wedding, but as soon as thats over, its out. I wish he would let me pull it back so I could see more of his beautiful face and neck. We constantly get the "pretty girl" comments but he already speaks up for himself and informs them he's not a girl, he's a boy. Here's a pic.

Another boy with long hair here.
People think he is a girl a lot also.
Sometimes after I have used his name and the pronoun HE in conversation, people still think he is a girl.
I think he is beautiful with long hair and would look great with a buzz too.My DH has long hair too, so i think my DS has grown up thinking it is very normal for boys to have short or long hair.
Oh, a good friend of his wants to grow his hair long now like my DS's. He told his Mom that h never wants a haircut again. Hee hee
