Alternatives to amalgam fillings

Thread Starter
My dad had a root canal done on Monday and is in the waiting stages until the tooth is filled. He has horrible teeth and previous amalgam fillings and would like to avoid more amalgam ones (obviously). So...what are the alternatives? The only one I'm aware of is composite, but other than that I'm clueless.

I'm supposed to find out the options and which one would work best...Any thoughts?

The standard of care after a root canal is a crown. It can be all porcelain, all gold, or a combination of the 2.

I agree with pp a crown is the best option.

...but what if the tooth already has a crown on it? The tooth my dad had the root canal on was one that he's already had a crown placed on. They don't put a crown on a crown, do they?
