My ds had a reaction to MMR, but he got it at 24 months, not 12-15 months.

I merged these two separate threads into one so that nothing gets missed because lots of places are giving these shots at different ages.

Well Kearnan had his MMR vax at 18 months and that is the vax he reacted to (didn't have any other vaxes that day so it had to be that one). Not sure if I should post this here or on the 12month one where MMR is listed. I'll post here, let me know if I should move it.

Kearnan had his first dose MMR vax at his 18 month appt. Directly afterward he was fine (no imediate swelling or fever). Soon after he stopped speaking and started screaming. It was the worst sound I have ever heard. A keening wail is the best I can describe it. It would start quiet and build to a crescendo louder than I thought a human could produce, then it would drop off again and he would make these sounds like a sick nb kitten. This continued almost 24hours a day for months. He would usually cover his ears at the same time. I thought he was sheilding himself from the racket he was making, but now I think he was actually holding his head because it hurt him. He stopped sleeping and stopped eating. He quit making eye contact around the same time. Stopped really interacting much at all, other than the screaming. Then he started having violent tantrums, he would kick and hit and bite, hurting us and himself. His eyes got dark circles under them, and he developed a rash over his whole body. Later MRI revealed damage from encephalitic brain swelling.

Oh, that is terrible. I'm so sorry that happened!!! Do you mind me asking how soon after he started acting this way? I haven't vaxed yet and want to do more research before I make a long term final decision.

Jacob had a reaction at 12 months to the MMR and Varivax.

It started at 10 days post vax and he basically woke up with what looked like huge welts all over his body. They weren't hives and it wasn't a rash. I really wish I had thought to take pictures. He looked like someone had been hitting him with a baseball bat with welts from head to toe the side of my palm.

What upset me the most was that I couldn't get the ER doc who saw him to admit that it could be a vaccine reaction. He asserted that a reaction of that nature would have had to have happened immediately to be vaccine related. A quick review of the lit showed me that reactions are most prevalent between 10-14 days after imunization.

It was within two weeks. It seems reactions (other than the immediate anaphylactic kind) are most common around 10-14 days post vax, and that was our experience. I would have to look over some of the old journal entries to be sure but I think it was right around day 10 after the vax that he stopped talking, and within the next 24hours the screaming began. The screaming didn't stop until he was treated by a naturopath months later.

Wow, I feel bad for the moms with really bad reactions in their kids. :

My son's wasn't that bad. He got a eczema-like rash all over his legs after getting his fourth Hib and third Polio at 12 months. It lasted for almost three months. He hasn't had any shots since then, and no sign of the rash either.

Wow, I have been a non-vaxer for so long that I haven't paid attention to what babies get at 12 - 15 months these days. When my only vaxed child was that age, the ped refused to give her the MMR and Hib together, and I don't remember his reason. I begged him for Hib, so he special ordered it from Japan, as it wasn't available in Hong Kong in 1991 :. So she got just Hib at 15 months and the MMR at 18 months. No reaction to either, thankfully. She didn't get DTP (no "a") at that time, it wasn't on the schedule.
