Burts Bees Baby Shampoo & Wash - Anybody have this happen?

Has anyone had your Burts Bees Baby Shampoo & Wash go rancid? I had two bottles, both about 1/3 full. They sat on a shelf in the bathroom. I never let my boys play with the shampoo bottles while they're bathing or anything (I've had one of them dump a whole bottle before), so it's not likely it got bathwater in it. Both of them, one worse than the other, went rancid. They all of a sudden started smelling really, really bad. I had to throw them away, and now I'm worried about buying that product again.

Anybody have this happen or do you think it was a one off thing?

yes, I've heard that's one of the problems with Burts Bees. People want natural products and they don't want parabens or other chemical sounding preservatives. That forces companies to use preservatives that often times are not as reliable as paraben based preservatives but that sound better to the consumer. The preservative that Burts Bees uses is not as reliable as other preservatives out there but in their quest to be "natural" they have to compromise somewhere.

I don't use shampoo often and have a couple of bottles (different brands) going at the same time. My current bottle of Burt's Bees shampoo has been sitting on my shower ledge about a year and it looks and smells the same as it did when I opened it. A bottle of Burt's Bees conditioner lasts me about 4 mos. (again, a couple of bottles are going at the same time) and it seems fine. I am very sensitive to smells, so I would have noticed something foul.

Ours have always been fine, and the kids throw it in the bath water all the time. But it's true that the preservative isn't going to be as strong/dangerous as conventional products.

I've heard Aubrey's patented their natural preservative and it's supposedly a miracle...their products seem harsher on baby skin, IMO, though. I love my Burt's and I'll cross my fingers this doesn't happen to my stash.

No, we use that product and LOVE it - I hope we don't have that problem! We go through it fairly quickly though because I also use it for bubbles!!!

There's a lot of controversy about these so called "all natural preservatives". My understanding is that some of the ingredients they use are preserved/processed with parabens (like their GSE) but, they just list the ingredient, not all the ingredients that were used in producing that one ingredient. So, it's believed that a lot of these so called organic, all natural preservative companies actually have parabens in their products but they don't list them because the parabens were used in producing other ingredients not added directly to their product.

Yep, I put the burt's bees baby wash in a foamer with water and it started smelling funky after that. I also had some BB body butter that grew mold on it after a few months.
