craigslist posting

I just came across this post on craigslist...
http://detroit.craigslist.org/bab/452146976.html
I'm not sure if I should write the mama and offer breastfeeding support. Part of me is tempted to at least mention it as an option, as she has a three day old baby and no money. Formula is a major expense and she is already struggling. On the other hand, maybe there are medical/emotional reasons that prohibit her from breastfeeding. It really is none of my business, however, she's the one who posted looking for help...

Maybe a non judgemental reply... perhaps something like "I don't have Enfamil or formula but I just wanted to let you know that you can still give BFing a go even though it's been three days if you'd like to. I can give you information if you want it" Maybe include LLL info... kellymom.com...

I replied to it:

(BTW I should be able to post this since I typed it, right? In other words I hold the copyright?)

I would suggest since your baby is only 3 days old that you try breastfeeding your baby. Your milk should be coming now (or soon) and you will be able to give your baby all the nutrition needed without costing you tons of money.
If you are not considering breastfeeding then you will be looking at HUGE expenses in formula as well as doctors visits and medications as formula fed children don't have anywhere near the immunities that breastfed children have.
You will save yourself money AND your child will be healthier.
If you aren't educated regarding breastfeeding your local hospital or community should have a breastfeeding clinic where you can get GREAT info and help with learning to breastfeed your baby. There are also other resources available such as www.mothering.com which has an entire forum dedicated to breastfeeding and more than a thousand members to help you out! You can also visit www.journeythrumotherhood.com for help and support.

Good luck with what ever choice you make, but remember that Breastfeeding has many more benefits than formula, including the fact that it doesn't cost anything!

I decided to write, as well...
Hi,
I'm sorry that I don't have any Enfamil formula to offer. However, I wanted to let you know that, even though it's been three days since your baby's birth, you can still give breastfeeding a try. It's free and (once you get the hang of it), easy. It can be a little tricky to get started, but there are many free resources that can help. If you are interested in help with breastfeeding, please let me know. I'd be happy to help you myself or give you the phone number for a free trained breastfeeding support counselor. If you truly are not able to breastfeed (medical reasons?), WIC can help with supplemental formula, although it may take several weeks to receive assistance and they don't provide all the formula your baby will need. Good luck and congratulations on your new baby!
