Thought I would share a letter I wrote to the president of Nordstrom. We'll see what happens...
On a recent shopping trip to your store, I had the opportunity to use the women’s lounge/restroom on the first floor so I could nurse my 3 month old baby. I very much appreciated the amenities that you provide to mothers of babies, such as comfortable chairs, changing tables, a clean, welcoming area, and most of all, a quiet place away from the hustle and bustle of the mall.
I was a bit saddened, though, to see the sign outside of the mother’s room on which there was a picture of a baby’s bottle. As a breastfeeding mother, I feel that this image undermines my efforts to nourish my baby in the most natural way intended. Although breastfeeding rates have increased over the past 20 years, American culture is still most certainly a bottle-feeding one. So, I was not particularly surprised to see that Nordstrom followed the popular culture.
In an effort to be more inclusive of breastfeeding moms, you might be interested to learn about the recent establishment of the International Breastfeeding symbol. It was created for exactly the type of women’s lounge that you provide to your customers. Their website is www.internationalbreastfeedingsymbol.org. For your convenience, I have enclosed a printout of the symbol. Perhaps you will consider using it in addition to the picture of the bottle.
