Nordstrom women's baby lounge

Thought I would share a letter I wrote to the president of Nordstrom. We'll see what happens...

On a recent shopping trip to your store, I had the opportunity to use the women’s lounge/restroom on the first floor so I could nurse my 3 month old baby. I very much appreciated the amenities that you provide to mothers of babies, such as comfortable chairs, changing tables, a clean, welcoming area, and most of all, a quiet place away from the hustle and bustle of the mall.

I was a bit saddened, though, to see the sign outside of the mother’s room on which there was a picture of a baby’s bottle. As a breastfeeding mother, I feel that this image undermines my efforts to nourish my baby in the most natural way intended. Although breastfeeding rates have increased over the past 20 years, American culture is still most certainly a bottle-feeding one. So, I was not particularly surprised to see that Nordstrom followed the popular culture.

In an effort to be more inclusive of breastfeeding moms, you might be interested to learn about the recent establishment of the International Breastfeeding symbol. It was created for exactly the type of women’s lounge that you provide to your customers. Their website is www.internationalbreastfeedingsymbol.org. For your convenience, I have enclosed a printout of the symbol. Perhaps you will consider using it in addition to the picture of the bottle.

Very well done.

Good job!

I thought the same thing recently at our mall's renovated family room. Great family room, but I hate the picture of the bottle on the door.

Although . . . there is a bottle warmer in the family room, so maybe that's what the bottle symbol stands for. My girlfriend's baby would not take bottles of expressed mama milk unless it was from the bottle warmer. So it's not a totally anti-lactivist device.

That's a good idea.

But did anyone else, before clicking that link, have a visual image of a
giant BOOB on the door?

I always nursed my babies in the Nordstrom "ladies lounge". The one by my dad's house is gorgeous!

I think I've mentioned here before that I love Nordstrom's lounges. I've taken DD in there for her bottles because it's quiet, calm and comfortable. No distractions.

I also wrote a letter to Nordstrom customer service after going to the new Nordstrom in Massachusetts in mid-September, and received this response:

Your feedback is very important to us. I was unaware of the international breastfeeding symbol, but will pass this helpful information along to our store planning and visual teams for future consideration.
I did receive the response a few days after writing.

i have utilized the women's lounge at my local nordstroms several times. it is large, comfortable, spacious and convenient.

however, the room smelled HORRIBLE.

like, dirty diapers bad.

maybe the diaper genie in there was broken or something but it was so bad i had to leave, and i nursed on the very comfortable bench over by the elevator bank instead. luckily, i have no issues with nip so it wasn't a big deal to me. but that stank was RIPE!!

op, thanks for writing to nordstrom's management about the sign. i am going to write a similar letter to the outlet mall near here who has a similar sign for their mother's room.

My nearest Nordstroms is an hour from here, so I didn't even know they had a lounge. Its good to know. Your letter is well written, let us know if you get a reply.

ROFL, I did, until I remembered that we have a symbol for that now.

That's awesome that you sent them a letter! I've always loved the nursing lounge but I loved even more was that the men's room has a changing table.

Whenever we were at a mall and I knew one of my DC needed a change I would head straight for Nordstrom so DP could change them

good for you mama!

so well said!

I worked at a Nordstrom before and during my pregnancy and I would love to see women nursing their babies on the nice, comfy couches in the dimly lit room (I don't know if it's different in other stores, but you had to walk through the lounge to get to the restrooms).

They also had a little room in the back offices area for pumping with a nice sign on the door that said "Mother's Room".

I hope they will put up the breastfeeding symbol.

Am I the only one who'd be annoyed to see the BFing symbol on a secluded room, implying that BFing mothers should secrete themselves away? After all, it's the bottle feeders who need facilities to warm the bottles up.

A nappy (diaper) is a much better 'baby care in this room' symbol. Or the simple baby symbol http://www.breastfeeding.asn.au/products/babycare.html

Awesome!
I have not been to a nordies for years, but I loved having a lounge to sit down and relax.
I am not one to nurse only in a "nurinsg area" so I wouldnt be offended.
I was once pointed toa nursing room at babies r us, nd I said no thank you, I was fine where I was. Those nordies rooms sure are nice tho@

Awesome job! I think about writing that same letter every time I'm there and see that bottle symbol.
Same thing for the baby section at Whole Foods! :

Well, not everyone uses diapers either, so I think thr Intl BF symbol is best. If you're not BF, chances are you don't know what it is.

great letter!
i was just in the "mother's room" at nordstrom's today and i didn't even notice the symbol on the door...i'll have to take a special look next time.
and i think the bf'ing symbol is so pretty...and to me, it just looks like a mama snuggling with her baby.

I should write the same letter to Sea World. They have a room that says "Nursing Room," with a big bottle on it. The cognitive dissonance is astounding.
