making burp cloth's

I bought some Gerber thin prefold diapers, I wanted to sew a cute fabric in the middle with some ribbon, should I wash the diapers first?

Yes, wash first. I'm not sure exactly what you have but in my experience prefolds tend to gather up a little and you want to cut your fabric to the prewashed diaper.
