Why am I not surprised

Was looking over my benefits today and saw this:

TRICARE covers maternity care, including prenatal care, delivery and postpartum care (newborns are covered separately). The following services are included:

* Circumcision;
* Emergency cesarean section;
* Epidural anesthesia for pain management during delivery;
* Medically necessary ultrasounds.

Okay, I giggled at the wording at first because circumcision is under maternity care and then they mention newborns are covered seperately. It makes it almost sound like mom would be getting cut. But no that's not the part that made me scratch my head. Scrolled down a bit and saw this:

TRICARE does not cover maternity ultrasounds for routine screening.

So, routine screening isn't covered but don't worry, even if that baby has anencephaly you can still have him circumcised free of charge!

wonder if they cover lactation services. My insurance did not-- but I'll bet they would cover circumcision.

So many reasons to be mad.

It is odd what insurance companies consider "important." The thing about covering circ but not routine ultrasounds remind me of one company I was covered under when I was in grad school. The insurance covered a lot of very elective procedures but would not cover a woman's annual GYN exam : I always thought it was odd that circ was lumped with prenatal care! Maybe because the OBs do it in a lot of cases? But it doesn't make sense.

That's weird because I was offered a routine ultrasound at the base hospital with DS.

Look around the Tricare webpage - it says on at least three pages that RIC is covered. My commander's son has to wear a helmet for a year because of some head molding. Tricare wouldn't cover the helmet, but they WOULD cover the reconstructive surgery he'd need later if he didn't have the helmet. And they covered his and his older brother's circumcisions. : It makes me SO angry. Our tax dollars are paying for circumcisions!

They're only supposed to cover things that are "medically necessary"! : That's really messed up!

IMHO TRICARE is !!! However, what insurance company isn't?

They cover a breast pump if you have a premature or sick baby. That was all I could find.
