I just wanted to say thanks to everyone on this forum! I started lurking here way back in April or so and was very curious about this subject. We were in the process of adopting an infant boy and although it hadn't been discussed, I was pretty sure that he was intact. We met him for the 1st time in last May and found out that yup! he most certainly is intact!! We brought him home for good in July. Thanks to all of the wonderful information I've received here I knew how to care for him, what to do (and what not to do!!
) and how to handle his pediatrician appointments. To the best of my knowledge he's the 1st intact boy we've had in the family, both immediate and extended. I've been able to discuss this issue with my mom, husband, etc. and nobody thinks anything of the fact that he's intact. It's just who he is and how boys are supposed to be! I'm also happy to report that although I was prepared to tackle both my ped and the nurse if they tried to retract him, neither one commented on the fact that he's intact or even touched his penis. Yeah!
He's had to go through so much in the 3 short mos. that we've had him with tranisitioning to a new family and lifestyle and going to dr. appts and having blood work done. I couldn't imagine adding the trauma of having him circumsized; but have discovered (much to my horror) that it is pretty common with adoptions to have this done. "Welcome to America and now we're going to chop off part of your penis." Niiiiiiice.
Anyway, a HUGE thank you to everyone for providing me with such great information. I was heartbroken to read a post from another adoptive mama on another board whose son was retracted by the NP. She had no idea why this was a bad thing. Thank goodness I found this board before we brought Cooper home! Having lived with Coop for just 3 mos I can't imagine why anyone circumsizes their sons! I mean, there is a huge movement in the dog world to ban cropping ears and docking tails, but not nearly the same outrage when it comes to our sons!
Thank you thank you thank you!
