If so, I would love to get directions & a materials list. Thanks in advance.

This book feels good in your hands. The paper is heavyweight, and the illustrations flow perfectly.

I did. I just used old sheets and clothes, tore or cut 2 inch wide strips, sewed them into long pieces. Braided em up and stitched in a circle.
I'm sure that wasn't much help.

I was thinking about it years ago and at that time I was able to find several books about it from the library.

I was just thinking of making one because yesterday I found a baby craft book at a thrift shop with directions for making one! Here's their directions:
Materials
Scissors, assorted fabric, torn or cut into long strips about 2 cm wide, needle and thread, iron
1) tie 3 strips together, anchor to chair or table and braid them fairly tightly. when an individual strip is almost down to its end, add a new one in with it and work the two together.
2) short but wide pieces of fabric can be cut into a zigzag to form a longer piece.
3) once you have a few metres of braid, start to make up the mat. begin by sewing the braid to itself and start to form a spiral, taking the needle over the free end of the braid and catching it to the sew line. always work from the same side, which should remain the mat frot. tuck any odd shapes in the strip edges to the back of the mat.
4) when you are happy with the size of the mat, secure the last braid end to the spiral edge. press the whole mat very firmly to help the shape set in. a very large mat, or one that feels loose, can be backed by sewing to a heavy cotton fabric.
HTH! Good luck.
