*Sweet* lactivist moment

I have 2 bfing bumper stickers on my vehicle. One says "Normalize breastfeeding" with the international breastfeeding symbol. The other says "reduce your risk" has the pink ribbon (breast cancer) and then "Breastfeed your baby". So, the other day I had to get gas, and here in OR you can't pump your own gas (mixed blessing trust me). The attendent comes to give me back my card and asks "Does that really reduce your risk?" And catching on (tg I had my caffeine lol I said "Breastfeeding? Oh yeah! It reduces the mom's risk AND the baby's risk actually."
A: Wow, I never knew that. I'll have to let my sister know. She ff her first but is having another. I think it'd be a good thing for her to bf for that reason alone!"
(Me- cheering inside lol) Yup, it reduces the risk of other cancers and other potentially deadly conditions as well.
A: How does that work?
Me (generalizing here): Well, our bodies are naturally made to lactate, and the closer we act to what our bodies are made to do the healthier we are right?
A: nods
Me: Tell her to look up promom.org on the computer- it has a list of 101 reasons to bf, and the cancer info and such is on there.

We chatted a couple more minutes, he thanked me for the info, I thanked him for being awesome (lol) and he promised to pass on the info. I was itching to give out my email but thought that'd be a little much. Even if I only ever get this one response those stickers were worth it. DH hates that they are on there , but I don't care.

Anyways, how flipping cool is that??? :

Love it! Where did you get the "Reduce Your Risk" bumpersticker? I really want one.

: Would love to have that one to add to my collection. It still irritates me that when they talk about breast cancer on tv they never mention bfing as a possible preventative. :

That's so great! I want one, too; where'd you get the sticker?
I also like the sticker on my friend's car that says, "Affordable Health Care Begins with Breastfeeding."

awesome! where do you find these stickers?

That is great that your stickers were able to open up the lines of communication and educate someone.

I live on Long Island in NY where breast cancer is an epidemic, it is amazing that bf really is not included in prevention education.

Both the stickers were bought off of Cafepress. I then got some magnetic strips from a company (suggested by somebody here.. can't remember which because it was last year sorry!) and put them on the back so I could take it off if needed (ie dh is driving car for a long period lol).

i wonder if my dh would object to me getting some bumper stickers. it's an '88 honda civic so it's not like it's going to resell for much, we bought it for a buck. my mini van in college had a bit of a reputation for the bumper stickers.

I would love one of these for my car too! I already have "If breastfeeding offends you, put a blanket over your head", and a euro sticker that says num nums. I have had people take pics of my car, and leave notes saying how much they love the stickers. I want more!

That is awesome! Wish more people knew about the advantages. My aunt died from breast cancer, and when my cousin (her daughter ) later had her two boys, she breastfed both of them. SO glad SHE knew about it!!

I wish I had someplace to put the tailgate of my pick up when it died. My parents made me put it down when I parked in front of their house when they first moved into this new neighborhood because they didn't want to offend the neighbors! Then again, "Live Simply So Others Can Simply Live" and other liberal sayings don't go over well in a neighborhood where the lowest home price is over $300K. I didn't have any kids and was not planning on having any at that time in my life, so no lactivist stickers, though they would've fit right in with all the others! I don't have any stickers on my car now. That was part of the agreement 4 years ago when Mom gave me the car. I do have a Red Cross blood donation window static, a parking permit from college, and a home made window cling of the triple goddess symbol. I think a breastfeeding sticker would be a safe thing. There isn't as much room on the car for the addiction to manifest again. Though I was thinking about vanity plates saying "BRSTFED"

that is so cool!! :makes mental note to get bf'ing stickers:

....that is one of the gazillion things i love about my DP--I can have bumperstickers on my car and he doesn't care!

I have a HIM tribal heartagram, a )O( on the back window, and two stickers that say "respect children" and "teach babies love: answer their cries!" I get a lot of weird looks, but if i've made even one person stop and think, it's so worth it

My car is a Saturn so magnetic bumper stickers don't stick and I don't put the sticky kind up. But dh has a Got Breastmilk magnet sticker on his car that he gets comments on all the time. People don't expect to get a crash course on lactation from him, but he gives them out regularly -- especially to the youth at our church. It started out as a couple kids razzining him about driving "his wife's car" but now it's become "Hey! can you tell x that cool stuff about breastfeeding you were telling us?" Some of the magic of breastmilk definately has a "No WAY! THAT'S AWESOME" factor to it.

Lissabob,

Thanks so much for sharing that story. Makes you think, doesn't it, about how many people must see your bumper stickers and are changed by them (even if it's just a tiny bit), though they may never say anything to you about it.
