I wonder if this girl is exagerrating "liked it so much" in order to validate the weaning bc truly how many bf 5 month olds will even entertain tasting powdered formula?

Seriously... My 4m old (at the time) wouldn't even take my pumped milk out of a bottle when DP and I went out for a few hours (I nursed right before I left, and as soon as I got home 4hrs later, so she was never in a situation of having to eat it out desperation ). I can only imagine her response to the situation if it were also a new taste with the new delivery system...

Liked it so much? How did he tell her?

This Mama was obviously going to wean anyway. She was looking for a way out.

Please remember the purpose of the Lactivism forum:
Quote:
The Lactivism forum is not intended to be a place where MDCers to bash mothers who are formula feeding. It is understandable that lactivists become frustrated over the mainstream formula feeding culture. Criticizing ideas, campaigns, and actions that negatively impact breastfeeding are all acceptable forms of lactivism. Name calling, criticizing individuals, or attacking women who choose to formula feed as a group are not.
While discussing Walmart's marketing practices in within the scope of the forum, criticizing or speculating about this one particular mother's motivations is not.

Score one for sleazy marketing.

It's possible that this woman was planning on weaning anyway, and used this as an excuse. But maybe she was thinking about weaning to formula but never got around to doing it, and the free formula was the "nudge" she needed. Without the marketing ploy, she may have given her baby another month or two of breastmilk, or maybe she would have kept on "forgetting" to pick up formula and ended up nursing to a year or longer.

It's also possible that once she got the formula home, other adults in the house (DP, MIL, etc) kind of bullied her into using it and discouraged BF. Maybe she was shy about NIP with a distractable baby and found the bottle easier.

The fact remains that she got the free can of formula and that encouraged her to wean. Boo! Hiss! to Walmart!

Ignorant and obvious question of the day:

Why didn't they save the can for someone who was already formula feeding? :

"They" who? If you mean Walmart, they wouldn't profit that way. If you mean the mom...well, I guess my answer is speculation and would butt heads with the UA so...eh...

I they a lot, sorry! They being Walmart. They being companies that make me sick with their practices.

Walmart probably gave away free formula for everybody with a baby, or everybody buying certain baby items such as diapers or baby clothes. Even moms already FF could be swayed to buy another brand.

The formula lady at Walmart tried to give me Pediasure bars for my kids yesterday and I looked at her like she had three heads. I said "no thanks, my kid's don't need that junk" and walked away. I make sure that both kids get plenty of fruits, veggies and healthy snacks. I only just started a vitamin supplement because it was on the list of complementary and alternative treatments for Autism that his doc suggested.

And it's not something about people buying certain things. It's one of the free sample tables in the aisle like with BBQ sauce, cereal, frozen pizzas, etc. Anyone with a kid gets hawked to.
