PSA: Check your baby's toes! - Page 2

Last Saturday I found one of my hairs wrapped around my baby's finger. The finger was swollen and red, but I pulled the hair off and it was fine.

DID, I'm glad you found the hair in time! It is scary!

Me either. Unbelievable! The amount of people posting that this happened to with their babe, definetely something to keep in mind next time baby fusses. Wow, and I'm pretty laid back about this sort of stuff.

I'm glad that I caught it in time. She has a little red ring around the base of one her toes where it was wrapped the tightest but otherwise her toes seem fine, nice and pink and mobile. She's back to her usual smily self, thank goodness.
I had an immense amount of mommy guilt all day yesterday thinking about how much worse it could have been.
Thanks for all the hugs!

I always check for this type of thing when I can't figure out the fussiness! Especially now as I am in the middle of severe post-partum hair loss. We co-sleep and DS2 manages to get some of my hair in his hands during the night, every night! In the morning, I work his little hands open to get the hairs out.

In our childbirth education class before DS1 was born, the instructor told a story about a situation she had witnessed just like that, where the parents could not figure out what was wrong and it was a hair wrapped really tightly around a toe. I never forgot that.

Wow! I am so glad she is OK!!! I will definitely keep a closer eye on DS's little fingers and toes if he gets fussy!!

We ended up with an ER visit for this with DS
His toe was swollen so I couldn't get the last bit of hair out myself . Luckily his toe never turned purple - the hair actually cut a little into the toe but that kept it from cutting off all the circulation. Funny thing was DS really didn't show signs of anything being wrong. I noticed when I went to play with his toes while he was nursing. Now if anyone can send me some of those nifty tweezers they had in the ER I'd love you forever.

This is why I love MDC...I'd read about this somewhere else on the boards a long time ago and now I always check if DD is fussy and can't be consoled.

The timing of the mother losing tons of hair after birth is really sucky...just when the baby's starting to grab things and move around a lot more, you're shedding a thousand hairs a day all over the house...

I've heard of the "hairs wrapped around fingers or toes" thing, but this will surely make me check a few times a day!

This is mentioned in Dr. Sears' The Baby Book and is probably one of the few things that has remained with me since reading it.

Scary indeed!

OP~glad your babe is ok!

Gumby, that is what I was going to say.

Dr. Sears says that drs usually treat it with a dot of hair-removal cream.
