I'm just curious if any of you midwives have your daughters as apprentices or assistants. My midwife's daughter is apprenticing under her and I think that is so neat. I'm daydreaming about the far off future and keep thinking how cool it would be to attend births with my girls. We'll have to see if that ever happens... But it's a neat thought anyway :-)

Two of the midwives in my town are a mother/daughter pair. They are at the local birth center, but do home births as well.

My 4.5 year old dd would follow me to all of my births if I let her! I can't wait until she is "old enough" to do so. How amazing would that be? Until then I just keep cementing in her that birth is normal!!

My 17yo daughter has started to apprentice with me. It started as an accident, she really had no interest, and we had the typical teenage/mom relationship (a bit strained). I was called to a birth about 1.5 hours away, never had been there, very rural. I couldn't get ahold of anyone, so I woke up my 17yo to come help with clean up and also to help drive inthe morning. She did a great job and the mom was very happy with her.
the next birth she came to, I forgot some supplies and asked her to drive them up. The mom and the CNM there both insisted she stay, she ended up doing another great job.
so far she has attended 10 births and learned blood draws, suturing, and other skills. I have been impressed how she is at births, the moms seem to really like her.
She still intends to go on to school and become a teacher, but I am working on her
. And she still has her teenage moments at home
the greatest problem I have is that she is also my babysitter when I am called out, so I am often torn.
I told her to keep a journal, someday she can write a book about being trained alongside her mom. One thing that has been an unexpected bonus, is since she knows me so well, she knows when I mean business, can read my face, and so is very in tune to what I need and the unspoken message.
I would love her to go with another midwife and do an apprenticeship and attend midwifery school. I'll keep working on that also.
