coming home/special first outfit

I never had a special outfit for ds to come home in and I've kind of felt bad about it ever since-not sure why it never occurred to me. Even though we are hoping for a homebirth, I thought it might be nice to have a first outfit for him.

Are most people doing this for their babes or am I getting caught up in all the cute baby clothes I see? If you are, what does it look like?

We had a homebirth with DD and honestly, I can't remember how I chose the outfit she first wore. However I do know which one it was and I made sure to wash it because I would like to use it again for this baby.

It is hard not to get caught up in the cute baby clothes though. The first time, pretty much every single item we owned was either purchased 2nd hand by me or given to us as a hand me down and most were in pretty rough shape. The outfit DD wore was out only new sleeper and we mainly chose to put her in it because it was so small that that was the one and only time she (9 lbs of baby) fit into it.

I'm thinking this baby might be bigger though so that really puts me in a bit of a bind. I guess overall I don't really care what the baby wears for the first outfit.

With DYlan, we took one of the little layette sets we received as a gift to the hospital with us for a coming home outfit. It was HUGE on him -- he looked like a rapper.

I do have a coming home outfit for this baby... a onesie that says Tax Deduction and a shirt and pants set from a consignment store that say "Future Rock Star" on the front.

It doesn't take much for us to amuse ourselves around here, lemme tell you.

Because this is a homebirth, I envision a cloth diaper and a sleeping gown or just plain skin in a blanket.

Were i to go to a hospital, I have a sleeper all my boys have come home in. I might choose that or just go with another gown or sleeper. I guess the first outfit ideal has changed for me!

My mom bought a sweet little outfit for the baby to wear home--she did this for DD too. I like having something cute for all the pictures!

My dad gave me the outfit they brought me home in and I was also blessed in. It's christening length dress but out of this fantastic red and floral 80's stripe with eyelet ont he sleeves and collar and smocking on the front. He made it. All by himself, even taught himself how to smock : You bet your sweet behind that'll be the outfit she wears for special newborn things!

DDs original coming-home outfit turned out to be WAAAY too big, so she came home in the only thing we had that would fit. Still a cute little sleeper, but nothing really special. My mom and I were out within a few days searching for preemie clothes for her! Everything was WAY too big. This time I have a teensy outfit and a normal newborn outfit packed in the "just in case" hospital bag, and if all goes as planned with the homebirth I will have DH bring that bag back in from the car and whichever one fits will be her first outfit!

I have a couple preemie sized sleepers but they're not particularly special (yet). I wanted to bring her home in an awesome little gown with matching hat & booties but then I found out that the gown won't work with the carseat. : So I picked up a couple tiny sleepers on sale at Target. They're both green but one has pink flowers and says "sweet" and the other one has A, B, C in yellow with cute words to go with each letter. The second one is in case the u/s was wrong or we have a blowout before homecoming. I think it's a nice idea to have a special coming home outfit but by the time I realized the gown wouldn't work I was too big and tired to do the shopping required to find the "perfect" outfit. Plus, preemie stuff is hard to find!

LittleLlama your outfit sounds really special - an heirloom made by dad!

I bought a preemie unisex outfit for Evan 2nd hand, it was cute, pale yellow with grey tiny horseshoes and red stars on it, shirt, jacket, pants, hat and booties.. Jay came home in a random terry sleeper.. this one I actually went out and bought a boy and a girl outfit at Target, they will likely be BIG even tho NB but I don't care!! One will obviusly be returned... I am NOT a character person but they are classic pooh and VERY cute (I really do like that collection).. I caved to the cute NB clothes this time!!

Since we don't know the gender, we decided against a "special outfit" and I crocheted a blanket instead. I figured if they're going to make their grand entrance into the house, it might as well be in something snuggley and warm

I really need to wash and soften up that blanket SOON though, it's a little stiff...

We have a Tax Deduction onesie too. (Married to a Republican.)

i had told tom towards the end of my 'time' with him, that is, that i just didn't know which outfit to use for sheamas' first outfit...so i said well i won't put him in anything then, i'll just keep him close to my body and snuggle next to my naked diapered son...tom was like no, he WILL wear an outfit...i was like wtf?! what is THAT about? control..................i'm sure now.

i have decided now that he will wear a tie dyed onesie that has multiple rainbow colors and a big red heart in the middle of it. my mom bought this for him months ago...i have a tshirt for megh w/ same design on it...also bought by my mama... i also have a rainbow striped knitted cap for sheamas that will match great! figure i'll just throw on some socks and voila! my funky beautiful tie dyed baby boy.

i can't even remember the first thing megh wore.........hmmm. it really didn't matter so much to me i don't think.

When I took the pregnancy test, my friend was here and after counting months she yelled, "Just in time for a tax deduction!"

So I had to get the onesie.

Thanks for all the responses. So much to think about-now I'm remembering ds didn't fit in any of his clothes either and he was always swaddled up the first few weeks. I could try and knit up a blanket instead but I don't know if I can pull it together in time

I vote for photos too!!!

For our babe...a friend of mine made a beautiful organic cotton cyladon green sweater--so we;ll use that over a little white top and pants, with a little white hat and booties. I wanted to knit something myself, but knew I would cry if it didn't fit, so this seems like the perfect choice.

I bought one boy and one girl outfit. I really prefer gender neutral clothes, but I was online at a store on the island we go to every summer, and they had these little bring the baby home sets that have their logo (happy memories for all of us), and they only had a blue or a pink, and I just couldn't decide. I won't be returning one, because I am going to wash them, but I hope to gift one to someone in need, because I don't need two! Both of my kids were almost 9 pounds, and didn't really lose any weight the first few days after birth, and the newborn clothes were still big!

We have a tradition that DH goes out and buys the coming home outfit while I'm in the hospital, since we never find out the gender. He's always done a GREAT job! And he also can't fuss at me for spending some $$ on baby clothes, b/c 2 of the boys came home in FULL ensembles (outfit, bib, blanket, hat, socks...) from Gymboree!

I honestly see a reason behind the whole going-home-outfit-craze, I remember being stressed out about going home. Getting released from the hospital takes so long, I worry about the carride and make sure the baby is comfy, changed and nursed right before I leave. Fiddling with some outfit that no one is gonna see is kinda pointless. Why does that seem to be so important here, enlighten my simple European brain...?:
