Pain from the birthball?

I've been bouncing/swaying on my birth ball to try to get things on the road and last night after a few minutes I started having really bad pains in my stomach...not like contractions, it was just these sharp stabbing pains from the top to the bottom...

Should I lay off the ball??

When I first started using my birth ball I had muscle pain (not like you are describing though)... I just assumed it was from using muscles that I don't normally use. Eventually the pain went away. However, yours sound different. I'd try sitting on the ball after you've taken a bath (when your muscles are more relaxed) or something and see if it helps the pain...if not then I'd stay off the ball.

Good luck!

You really shouldn't bounce when you're PG...it can cause problems with the attachment of the placenta. Just sitting on the birth ball helps to move things along by helping the baby to fall into your pelvis and put pressure on your cervix.

I'd continue to sit on it but just sit. Use it as you would your couch, chair, etc. Whenever you are sitting or at rest, sit on the ball.

Pain isn't good so if it continues I'd call your dr/mw since you could have caused yourself a problem. I do get pain occasionally when I stand up from sitting for awhile because the baby has dropped even lower but it doesn't sound like you've described.

I really do not see how light bouncing could be harmful......... what am I missing?

.
That's what my doula said too - no bouncing, especially if there's pain. She said a gentle rocking or circling motion is safest.

I just called my doula as I was not seeing the logic to this and either does she as bouncing is one of the things he as trained about even and she can not see how it would be different then having sex! Bouncing would be light compaired to sex and the placenta!

I mainly just bounce a very little bit (less than during sex) and rock in a circle at the same time. It could have just been muscle pain...I see my m/w tomorrow I'll ask her about it.

Another question.....I spent most of my pregnancy jogging (very bouncy), jumping rope, etc, all which was okayed by my HCP. Just curious how some is more harmful than others?

Huh, must be a weird contraction or something...got the same thing (sharp pain) while walking around the grocery store.

Funny how you truly DO forget what contractions feel like...it's been over 2 years for me.

Could be things moving around to help baby move down as well. Things have to stretch and thats not always so comfy!

I swear I stretch some odd things while on the ball. LOL It gives me so much more motion though then bed or couch does and I do not feel like such a big blob!

Hope your getting ready body is more peaceful for you!

I wasn't taught that women should bounce on the birth ball, but have never heard anything negative about it either. I would do whatever is comfortable to you and quit doing anything that hurts. Maybe just sitting on it and swaying/rocking/circling would feel better? Or don't even sit on it, you can kneel against it on your knees and rock/circle your hips around which also helps with positioning and keeping the pelvis loose and open.

I know for some women there is too much pressure/pain to actually sit on the birth ball once baby is engaged. I feel sharp pains sometimes now down low in my cervix (even though my baby is not that low yet) but I'm not sure that's the same as what you're describing?

I haven't had any pains like that again, but I did have the sharp pulling on my cervix when I got up today, hoping that means the ball is doing *something*!!!
