velvet burp cloths

Several friends of mine have received burp cloths that are four squares of velvet with a silky backing. They all absolutely rave about them. Of course they are ridiculously expensive and they wouldn't have them if they had not been gifts.

Each one has asked me if I could do a homemade project for them, either more burp cloths, bibs, blankets, etc.

I need to figure out what kind of cloth to buy. Has anyone seen these. I think they are stretch velvet. No idea what the silky back fabric is.

Any suggestions about selecting velvet and washing instructions would be appreciated.

a year or 2 ago I made some pillow cases and also a buckwheat hull pillow with the stretchy velvet that they sell at Joann Fabric. It has held up great. At the same time, I made a pillowcase with the more expensive velvet. It hasn't worn very well in comparison. I have thrown both in the wash, maybe thats my problem. To me, they both feel soft and cozy and luxurious- so Id go for the stretchy which is less expensive and easier to deal with when sewing. Have fun!

any way to get a picture of it so I can get a better idea?

I have some stretch velour here...but I can't picture what it would look like as a burp cloth - it doesn't seem to be very absorbant, yk?

Finding a picture is one of my problems. All of these people asking me to make things live in different parts of the country so I can’t even just pop over and check them out. I have seen the burp cloths once but it was during a brief visit and I didn’t really study them like I should have.

thats a link to a page that shows velvet blankies... I dont have any way to send a pic of the pillows I made, currently. When I get my digital camera back (my bro has borrowed it) I can email you a pic. Unfortunatley, my pink velvet pillow bit the dust. DH washed it and put it on the line to dry. That was the homemade buckwheat hull one. He put it inthe washing maching, and the whole machine was creaking and getting pretty crabby... Anyway the pillow wound up on the line for a few days in the sun, but the hulls inside the pillow somehow molded?!?! Must have been the humidity... The stink was quite something. We ended up chucking the wrecked cover and putting the hulls in the compost. Bummer.

I did a search on google for velvet burp cloths... so far a lot of sites have come up offering velvet blankets, but no burp cloths. Do the burp cloths youre trying to duplicate look like quilts- dykwim? 4 squares sewn together?

Okay - now I'm obsessed with this! LOL!

Is that blanket similar to it?

Can you describe it in detail?

Four squares - what size? Was it bound with satin blanket binding? Did it have a satin back?

I can help with a better description!

FYI I'm having a hullofa time sewing velvet to woven for a diaper bag I'm making. I"m ending up having to hand=baste it together becuase the woven slips around while I sew it to the velvet. Silky material would probably even be more challenging. Be prepared to potentially have to do some hand-work prior to sewing

BTW I"m using fabric.com's cotton velveteen (woven) that is 13 bucks a yard. This stuff is decadent! You could also try velour which is super soft but knit.
