My best friend made a sling and a few nursing shirts from their patterns. The sling went through 3 babies and then she gave it to me to use. Unfortunatly, she is a lot smaller than me, so it didn't work very well for me, but it was still in good condition. (I ended up purchasing a XL Maya wrap that worked really well for me...although she did offer to sew me one, I didn't want to add to her stress since she was going through a rough time)

She made hers with a cotton woven green gingham material. She really like that because it was cool enough to be useful in the summer too. She also had a number of loops and tie strings sewn onto it to hold keys and such, and a pocket to hold a dipe for quick trips out. I remember she said something about making sure to get really good rings to be sure it is safe.

BTW...these are the patterns she learned to sew on, so they are pretty good for a beginner.

hi jennifer z! thanx for the advice. i just thought of another question: what materials are good for slings? is anything a nono for sling fabric?

I am not big on sewing, but I think that I read someplace that a woven is better than a stretchy knit until you have more expertise. The pattern usually says on it what type of fabric you are supposed to use.
