My 2yo is going in for surgery next week. I'm guessing they're going to want to cath him, and not sure how I can make them do it right since it will happen in the OR and I won't be there. Anything specific I should say?

What type of surgery is he having. my son had two sets of tubes put in and his tonsils and adnoids taken out and he was never cathed for anything. In any event, if they are going to cath, I would flat out insist on a foresking knowledgeable nurse or dr doing it and I would want to speak to them ahead of time. Good luck.

NICU nurses often know how, or European (as in went to school in Europe not just born there) nurses. Some American nurses will say they aren't going to retract but still pull back "just a little" b/c they don't have the same definition of retraction that you do, so be sure to ask exactly what they plan to do.

I would tell the Dr. that you want someone who knows what they are doing like a NICU nurse. Tell him that if you see any sign of trauma to his penis you will pursue legal action. Ask them if instead of a cath they can use the baggy to do the urine catching. They look like condoms and are attached with sticky like tape. If they must cath.
Ask to speak to the one who will be doing the cath. Get a detailed description of how it will be done step by step. All you should hear is that they will move the foreskin around till the foreskin lines up with the urinary opening in the penis. They do have to move the foreskin around a bit for this but they do not need to push the skin back at all. Just kinda move the overhang.

from what I've read fishing inside for the opening is bad as well as it can scratch/damage the glans. So I'd make ABSOLUTELY SURE that the person who cath has an experience with intact penises (some NICU nurses can be good at this).
