Please send Jasper prayers and healing energy

On Tuesday night, very late, I had to bring our sweet newborn to the ER. He was getting dehydrated, wouldn't nurse, and was increasingly fussy to the point that whenever his position was changed at all, he screamed. So we called the pediatrician because his fever was 100.4, then 3 hours later after unbundling him in case he was just overheated, it was 100.7. She sent us to the closest emergency room. By the time I got here, his fever was nearly 102 and he had a rash. We had to do blood cultures, a chest x-ray, catheter, and a spinal tap! That was the most horrible experience of my life, absolutely.)

They're pretty sure now it isn't bacterial meningitis, but they're doing antibiotics and fluids via IV and waiting on a bunch of test results. His fever has been going slowly down over the last few days, and although it was 101 at one point last night, most of the time last night it was 98. So he's on the mend. They talked about releasing him today, but they want him to be fever free for 24 hours, so maybe not until tomorrow. Any advice on dealing with thrush since I'm sure he's going to have it from this experience is appreciated. As are any prayers or healing energy for my little boy.

I hope that you are all home and healthy very soon.

Hi. I posted in H&H, but wanted to send a prayer too. Hang in there.

I'm so very sorry you're going through this. We went through almost an identical scenario with my firstborn when he was 5 days old, only we caught it later. He was very dehydrated and had to stay for a week. I pray you don't, seeing as how it sounds like you caught it early. It's very scary going through everything you've gone through. My heart breaks for you.

Good instincts, mommy. Way to go for listening to your gut. You saved your baby! I'm saying a prayer for your sweet baby.

What a frightening thing to have to go through with a newborn. I am so sorry, and I'm glad to hear he's doing better. I hope he is home soon.

Thank you for all your well wishes. He's doing much better and his fever has been down all day. They want him to be fever free for 24 hours, and then he should be discharged tomorrow morning we hope. He's eating slower than usual and has lost some weight, but not too bad from what I can tell. He doesn't seem dry to me, and I remember when my dd lost more weight than usual after birth before my milk came in, her lips and skin were very very dry. Jasper's were as well when we got to the ER. But right now, he's peeing lots and has wet lips, etc. so that's a good sign.

Now we're on to worrying about what to do to heal the rift between dd and I (I saw her for a few hours today, and she was SUCH a trying handful). Clearly with first a new baby she has to share breasts with, and then with Mama being away for 4 nights with no preparation to help her anticipate it coming, her world is upside down. And I'm too sleep deprived to treat her with kindness and gentleness when she throws books at Grandma's head (not in anger, just because) or leaps onto me and knocks me over or sneezes all over and wipes it onto her shirt.

I'm so glad to hear your little one is getting better. What a scary ordeal! Regarding thrush, I had it with DD1 and am taking a probiotic supplement now as a preventative. Your babe should get some benefit from it through your milk. I know you can get infant probiotics, but I don't have any experience with using them. That's my only suggestion other than doing all you can to keep your immune system strong (echinacea, vitamin C).

I have also been struggling with my changing relationship with my toddler (33 months). I am tandem nursing too and there is just not enough of me to go around. She has been acting out by giving me the silent treatment (i.e., not wanting to hug me goodnight, etc), hitting the baby (only once), peeing her pants 3x/day (she's been diaper free since she was 17 months), refusing to take naps and of course, LOTS of tantruming. I'm trying to hang in there and I think it's slowly getting better. I hope it gets better for you soon.

Hope your little dd gets adjusted and you get plenty of rest to help her too

hey there, i'm not in your DDC but wanted to respond because my first also got sick with a fever at 12 days old. full work-up including spinal, and 3 days of IV antibiotics and liquids. so, i know how you feel. big hugs. i'm so glad he's OK!

the thrush was pretty bad, but diflucan took care of it quickly (after a few weeks on nystatin, which didn't work at all).

DD was back to her old self within a week, definitely no long lasting effects. she does have a tendency to run high fevers, i think it's just her body's way and always has been (she gets up to 104.5 pretty easily). maybe your son is the same way.

good luck with your DD. take care of yourself, too. it took me a long time to get over that scare.
